“Doctor_Doom - The sensible choice for the majority who require the benefit of a 4x4 is 'All Terrain' tyres (Road, Mud, Snow) and a car which can fully lock the differentials for maximum traction.
These All terrain tyres are a compromise between 'on road' requirement of fuel economy and low noise levels, and 'off road' or low grip requirement on a loose surface.
The Chelsea tractor car types like the BMW X5, the 'Sport' Range Rovers, or the Lexus type SUV's fitted with their large rimmed low profile wheels with road tread are a world apart from a utility vehicle and are effectively sporty large vehicles with a high centre of gravity (form over function) and have none of the former qualities. They might have a type of 4wd system, but then so does a Porsche 911, and that would be useless in off road conditions as well.
Anyone who confuses the two types of vehicle only do so through ignorance, and if you had to buy a Chelsea Tractor as a utility vehicle would be making a very expensive mistake...”

“just what you need in a country that's flat, has good roads, and next to no snow."
So you've never been near Birdlip, driven around the Forest roads and don't remember last winter then.
You should get out more.”

“Let's not forget, Desenchanter, that 4x4s are huge fun; the functionality is extra :)”

“Desenchanter,
thank you for your knowledgeable input although it may well be wasted on someone who doesn't drive a car and only photographs them in an attempt to get the drivers fines for minor misdemeanours.”
