500 interviews for 120 jobs at new Tesco in Churchdown
MORE than 120 people will be starting new jobs in Churchdown when the new Tesco store throws open its doors for the first time later this month.
The grand opening of the store in Cheltenham Road East will take place on Thursday, October 24 at 8am.
Huge interest in the vacancies generated more than 500 interviews, with a mad scramble to take up the sought-after positions at the latest branch to open in Gloucester.
Recruitment was led by store manager Stuart Whelan, who started his career with Tesco 16 years ago.
"I was thrilled by the response we received to our recruitment drive," he said.
"There were so many great applicants which made the decision very tough when it came to selecting the successful team.
"I am really pleased with my new team and I'm looking forward to working with them."
The store will offer a range of services, including a health and beauty department and baby care range.
There will also be click and collect, where customers order online and pick up their shopping at a time which suits them.
Campaigners lodged 267 letters of opposition to the new branch when planning documents were submitted in November 2010. Many have concerns over increased traffic in the area and an impact on the 'village feel' of Churchdown.
Brian Jones, from Churchdown, said: "Traffic along Cheltenham Road East is horrendous and a bit of a nightmare, but I welcome anything that offers jobs and more choice. It is difficult to find a balance."
Its supporters said it would help families pay less for their shopping. Tesco has also offered its support to the annual Fireworks Extravaganza to be held in Churchdown Park. It has given a £1,000 donation towards fireworks. Tewkesbury borough councillor for St John's Kay Berry said: "It will be good to see the end of the roadworks in the area, it has been a long journey for Tesco, but an even longer journey for residents. Tesco will offer choice and value, so it will help out families."
Store opening hours will be seven days a week from 8am to 10pm, Monday to Saturday, and 10am until 4pm on Sunday.
