A PARISH councillor has warned of dire consequences on Brockworth's roads if 80 homes are built in the area.

John Shellswell lives on the Abbotswood Estate and is backing a campaign led by other councillors and residents to oppose plans for 80 homes on land off Kennel Lane.

He says the increased levels of traffic in Greenbank Road will cause problems.

He said: "There is very little off-road parking for residents in the roads around Kennel Lane, so the cars park all the way up one side of the roads.

"If you think that there's going to be 80 dwellings, possibly with two cars each, it's just going to be impractical.

"Based on the road width, it's just not practical to use as the main thoroughfare for the construction traffic, and, potentially, 160 cars."

Mr Shellswell added that there would also be a problem if new bus services were introduced to serve the new development, as they would struggle to get down the road.

His concerns have been echoed by fellow parish councillor and Gloucestershire County Councillor Mike Collins.

He said: "There are always a lot of vehicles parked along there. They've got nowhere else to park.

"The main worries I have are the flooding risk and traffic issues, neither of which have been addressed in the plans.

"The trouble is, there are all these guidelines for the minimum width of a carriageway, but if the developer can't manage it, they often just carry on and build the development anyway.

"I think it's a hazard, especially when you consider there will be children in the area, wanting to cross the roads safely."

Kelvin Tutill, managing director of David Wilson Homes South West, said: "As with all of our planning applications David Wilson Homes adheres to the prescribed guidelines and this includes necessary provision for transport and local infrastructure."

“The homes will just bring more traffic problems to the area. I have already had a few near misses and this would just increase the flow of traffic even more. It is only a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt.”
