9.30am - EXCLUSIVE - 7,800 more new homes confirmed for Gloucestershire.
GLOUCESTERSHIRE will have to take an extra 7,800 homes,
ministers announced today.
-

A development blueprint published by the Government today
confirms proposals for more than 50,000 new houses to be built
in the county over the next two decades, despite warnings over
flooding and the credit crunch.
It would see another 7,800 homes added in Gloucestershire
from the original draft regional spatial strategy , bringing
the total for the period 2006-2026 to 56,400.
This is despite warnings that government efforts to help the
flood recovery would be “rendered worthless” if thousands of
houses were built in vulnerable areas.
There had also been calls for housing figures in
Gloucestershire to be revised downwards because of the global
economic downturn.
A 12 week public consultation now gets underway on the
Government proposals for additional housing, ending on Friday
October 17.
It is planned to publish the final planning document before
the end of the year.
The proposals unveiled by the Government support those of an
independent panel under which Cheltenham urban area's total
would be cut from 8,500 houses to 8,100 but Tewkesbury would
see a massive hike from 10,500 to 14,600.
Gloucester sees no change from 11,500, while it is proposed
to increase the number of new houses in Stroud by 2,400 to
9,100.
Cotswold sees a rise of from 6,000 to 6,900, while in Forest
of Dean there are proposals for another 800 new homes, taking
the total to 6,200.

“The government strategy to build these houses is based on a predict and provide model based on outdated statistics. It assumes 3.2% economic growth/year for 20 years! which is totally unrealistic. EU workers are going home, the economy is shrinking, there is climate change with peak oil coming soon. The figures don't add up - we don't need these houses! especially on our precious green spaces around Cheltenham.”

“I totally agree with P Cooke. The people that make these decisions usually live in the Disneyland villages, so they don't give a flying saucer about the peasants flooding now and again.
Surely, if this slump in house building goes on for a few years, many East Europeans will leg it back home anyway, so we won't need so many homes.
As for all these crazy planning decisions, all I can say is that the lunatics are in charge of the asylum.”

“I think it's a great idea, but only IF the government use it to house ALL of gloucesters social housing population, then those of us who BUY a house in a nice area and PAY tax won't have to put up with living mixed in with these socail hand grenades who contribute ZERO to the county but TAKE everything, anyone else think the same ?”

“Anon Leckhampton
At least Laurence Robertson has done his best for Longford and has represented us. He was elected our member of Parliment as are our local and borough councillors. This is democracy. Who elected this QUANGO in Exeter surely this is not a democratic decision. They should all be replaced at the next election”

“Before long this area wil be rnamed Gloschelttewks, we shall end up with one sprawling mass. Why does successive governments insist on developing in areas that are allready over developed?
It is total lunacy, government and developers are destroying the very fabric of our society. In the current economic climate who will be able to afford these houses? Builders are laying off workers by the thousand, doesn't this send out a message. I would expect all MP's in the area to fight this tooth & nail. I would like to see a concerted effort now to get rid of the millions of illegal immigrants in this country, this would at least free up many areas for redevelopment.
As far as this latest news is concerned ther must be a great deal of collusion between government and builders to force this through. I am sure everyone will have their own reasons for not wanting these blots on their landscape, and I totally agree. I happen to live in Leckhampton and enjoy walking it often, but not much longer.”

“The numbers follow those proposed by the EiP Panel.
However whilst
Development in the Green Belt, if in line with the EiP report would be at a level of 7500 dwellings, 1500 more than proposed in the submitted RSS, the way the report is written appears to allow for more of the urban extensions to be within the Green Belt. This may simply be poor drafting, particularly given the spelling mistakes etc. Does nobody proofread these documents?”

“Please be careful where you build these houses. What we DON'T want is a another Cypress Gardens. Everyone I know is sick to death of hearing about bonding with the neighbours, community spirit', ' endless interviews , duck races and the like. Compared to disasters in other parts of the world, these people were never without a bed to sleep in and presumably their insurance paid for the repair and refit. Why not put this to rest, for a few, they are enjoying giving their bleeding-heart stories over and over. Move on !”
