The crash occurred near Shipton Oliffe at around 2.18pm.

Firefighters from the Cheltenham East station were called to the scene with one car in a ditch and ablaze.

Paramedics attended to a man who was unconscious at the side of the road.

Meanwhile a fire crew from Cheltenham West station were requested to provide extra water.

Two hose reels and a breathing apparatus were used and the fire was quickly brought under control and extinguished.

Police closed part of the road to ensure the safety of the emergency services and members of the public.

The A40 was fully open but drivers were not able to turn off the A40 onto the A436.

The road was fully reopened shortly after 6pm.
