AGE UK Gloucestershire is opening its first charity shop.

Gloucester MP Richard Graham will be leading the celebrations on September 7 at a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Stuart Croft, of Age UK Gloucestershire, said: "There have always been Age UK shops but this is the first Age UK Gloucestershire one. That means all of the money raised will be invested in services to support the older folk of Gloucestershire"

The shop is at 126 Barton Street, Gloucester. Chief executive Christina Snell added: "There is a great tradition of community and voluntary work in this part of Gloucester with over 40 voluntary organisations within a mile radius of the shop."

“It looks like some people have forgotten what the purpose of a charity shop really is. I've never bought from one but if I ever did, I'd be happy to round up the price to the nearest fiver or tenner because yes, it's a charity. Those who shop in Primark and Asda shouldn't expect to find second hand quality goods at the same prices as the rubbish on offer at those outlets.”

“Yes, some charity shops charge far too much. The Sue Ryder shop in Abbeydale seems to think that it is selling new items. Let's hope that the Age UK Gloucestershire shop doesn't charge silly prices, or they will soon go out of business.”

“Depends what charity shop you go to. Saw a very lightweight jacket from British Heart Foundation last year for £9.99. I think that was very overpriced for second hand. It was a St Michael Jacket but still very expensive for second hand.”

“The quality of clothes at Primark is quite poor, whereas charity shops sell clothes of all qualities. It's much better to buy a second-hand item in good condition than a new poor quality item. As it happens, almost all of the clothes in the Barnardo's shop in Quedgeley are only 99p each (including some that are new and still have the shop label on); I can't see Primark beating that.”

“I would rather shop at Primark, cheaper than the cheapest clothes at a charity shop.”

“I love charity shops, but I question the chosen location of this one. It's barely a stone's throw from the Salvation Army shop at Barton Gates. Why not open one in Tredworth? The whole of Tredworth has had nary a charity shop since the Gloucestershire Lifestyles shop closed a few years ago. The closest charity shop to Tredworth is Elim in Park End Road.

BTW, the Barnardo's shop and sorting depot near Tesco in Quedgeley does a roaring trade - no competition, you see.”
