The cold callers are informing residents that they are entitled to a £2,000 refund on their council tax bill due to incorrect banding and then attempting to make an appointment to visit their home.
The borough council wants to alert its residents that any queries with regard their council tax banding can be made direct and free of charge through the Valuation Office.
While cold calling is not illegal, the council wants to ensure its residents are aware that it is a private enterprise with no connections to the authority or the Valuation Office.
The council's lead member for finance and asset management, Councillor Allen Keyte said: "We think it is only fair to warn our residents about these types of calls.
"We don't want any of our customers losing out on any money that is rightfully theirs when they can simply contact the Valuation Office to deal with it free of charge. If anyone has any concerns about a cold caller, they can phone the council on 01684 272034."
