Approval given to uni fee hike
THE University of Gloucestershire has been given the go-ahead to charge fees of up to £8,250 from next year.
After waivers for poorer students are taken into account, the estimated average fee levied for degree courses in 2012 will be £8,139.
University fees were released today by the Office for Fair Access.
Offa confirmed 123 universities and 18 colleges wanted to charge above £6,000 and all but two had been approved.
Eighty universities and one further education college will now charge fees of £9,000, the maximum allowed, for one or more of their courses.
Paul Drake, the university's director of external relations, said: "Our fee level is competitive and represents good value against the cost of higher education elsewhere in the region."

“@Adamchelt. You should not assume that people who have a different opinion to you have not been to university, nor that their opinion is somehow less valid. I am sure that many have weighed up the pros and cons and for them, in the case of Glos, the cons (including the fees) outweigh the pros. Personally, I would be sad to see Glos disappear as a Uni, but I would be very happy to see it being forced to re-examine where it can bring greatest value and to refocus its energies in those areas.”

“Yes Adamchelt - all true - you have however missed the snop appeal. Also not every Uni graduate gets the cause and effect linkage essential to ,ake rational decisions - our world is full of rubbish decisions by graduates and PhDs.
All that apart, the question is whether the University of Gloucester is in that upper league - does it attract the same calibre of staff able to give that little more push to those seeking not only knowledge but how to put knowledge and reasonimg to practical use. I don't have the answer - do you?”

“is there any point in telling people to actually check their facts, and trying to explain how Universities get their charter and keep them, the process of external examination, the QAA audit, the continuing good performance of the Uni in league tables, the large economic and cultural benefit it brings, the many students who pass out to good productive jobs and lives and so on...probably not. Being able to weigh up evidence and come to a rational conclusion is something you learn at University - maybe try to enrol? You'll have a job though because the uni is very oversubscribed in many areas - I guess prospective students do their research better than the "contributors" here...”

“Surely this move by Glos (and other second rate universities) will lead to a decline in the number of students attending. Perhaps we can hope that this will in turn lead to the culling of courses that are not of a true degree level and allow Glos to focus on its strengths, where it will be able to justify the fees since it will be offering value for money.”

“They should pay you £8,139 to go to The University of Gloucestershire. I mean its just a glorified Further Education College.”

“he-devil, I went to this uni a few years back and have a good job as a Software Engineer.
However, it is not a top university (not even close) and should not be charging these ridiculous fees. I would not have gone there if they had been the fees when I went.”
