PLANS for a new Asda store on the Kingsway estate are up for public debate.

Residents are being urged to have their say about the proposals for the food store this week.

A public consultation will take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday so developer Robert Hitchins Ltd can get feedback from the community before a planning application for a 25,000sq ft supermarket is submitted.

A spokesman for Robert Hitchins said: "We hope that people who live in Kingsway and Quedgeley will come to the public exhibition. Their views will be invaluable as we prepare to submit a planning application.

"We are aware that thousands of homes have been built in Kingsway and that the people who live there have repeatedly said they'd like more services and more choice.

"An Asda foodstore would help meet that demand and would have a positive economic impact on the area."

If planning permission for the store is granted, it will located at the entrance to the estate on the A38.

The Gloucestershire-based developer has held exploratory talks with Gloucester City Council about the proposals, which they say would create up to 230 jobs. Kingsway Residents Association chairman Barry Kirby called on the community to attend.

He said: "I will certainly be going to the events, to find out more but also to consult with residents myself to find out what they think." He said he thought the new store would be a good think for Kingsway, adding: "I think it will also be good for Quedgeley in adding some competition."

Consultation events will be held in the committee room of the Quedgeley community centre, from 4.30pm to 7pm on Thursday, from 10am to 6pm on Friday and from 10am until 1pm on Saturday.

Representatives from Robert Hitchins and Asda will be on hand to answer questions.

If built, the store would include a cafe, 239 parking spaces, a bicycle park and recycling centre.
