He has not yet confirmed where the two trials are expected to be held, but Gloucestershire and Somerset are believed to be the most likely.
The plans had been due to start in November.

They attracted huge controversy. There was public outcry from many who believed the badgers should not be killed, and there was insufficient evidence to suggest it would stop the spread of bovine TB, and some farmers and vermin controllers intimidated by the threat of activist action.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affraids (Defra), postponed the November cull at the eleventh hour, after a survey showed badger numbers were twice as high as first thought.
At the time, Defra said the earlier the delayed cull could begin was June 1, due to a closed season to prevent distress to badger and their dependent offspring.
Dairy farmer Jan Rowe, director of GlosCon, the company set up to organise the cull locally, said county farmers had been ready to go. When the green light is given this summer, under police supervision, trained marksmen will remove a minimum of 70 per cent of badgers in each area.
Owen Paterson told The Daily Telegraph that the cull would begin in June.

“Firefly, yes how odd that is, also most of the anti-badger cull comments have '-' ratings, dark forces are at work in many different areas, incl the - 'ratings!'”

“Strange that every time I've tried to vote up the the 'anti-badger cull' comments the site is telling me I've already rated them. This is the first time I've clapped eyes on this article and read these comments . Conspiracy anyone....?”

“I am becoming more and more convinced that the real reason the government are so desperate to press ahead with this cull, in spite of public opposition and scientific evidence that it will not work, is their hidden agenda to clear greenfield sites of badgers and their setts prior to building on them.”

“Thanks Jude, we will continue to organise oppostion to this cull, and to promote vaccination.
The cull will not only devastate badger numbers, it will swing the side of public opinion against farmers.
The only winners in this will be the men paid to shoot the badgers. If you want to help, please get in touch!”

“Too right it won't be forgotten and given the breadth and numbers lined up against (public opinion/tourist industry/democratic voice in our parliament/all leading scientists and animal experts(outside of DEFRA-salaried/independently-thinking farmers/all national and international animal welfare organisations/environmentalists etc etc)-it must and will be stopped...what we all need to be doing now is making this known to supermarkets (we should start boycotting dairy products from those supporting/tacitly ignoring the cull) and our MPs and local Councils (don't forget the Local Elections coming up in May-make your voices heard!). Look on and support GABS (Gloucestershire Against Badger Shooting) and spread the word! this is barbaric nonsense which will have devastating consequences with no solution to bTB-in fact could make it worse!”

“We will be in the fields, stopping this pointless unscientific, undemocratic slaughter.
Any farmer who allows it will be named and shamed... just like the dairy industry is planning to do to farmers who don't sign up to their voluntary code.
Pressure will be brought against any wholesalers and retailers.
This will not pass without consequence.”

“So the killing wont start until June to prevent stress to badgers & their offspring, how reassuring that the Government is considering the welfare of the badgers, let them rear their young....then kill them.
Vaccination & improved biosecurity are two of the answers, killing badgers is not, & this wont help cattle, when this is found to be true it will be too late. Act on the scientific reports, not on the wishes of the NFU.
Yet another example of DEFRA & the NFU being one & the same (live animal exports being another example) Owen Paterson, & all your cronies, you should be ashamed.”

“Does this government have some kind of electoral deathwish? The public will not allow this to happen-indeed the backlash could be the deathknell for the dairy industry. There is acknowledgement that tightened bio-security measures are already contributing to a reduction in TB and badger vaccination is producing better early results than expected.Wake up farmers-do not be led down this disastrous road by a morally corrupt government which has most definitely lost its way.”
