The Big Issue: Why we need more public spending in Gloucestershire
THE Tories have not had an easy ride of it being in the driver's seat at Shire Hall over the past 18 months.
The High Court judgment in November overruling Shire Hall's plans to close 10 county libraries came as a real hammer blow to the Conservative administration.
In spite of challenges by both the Liberal Democrats and library campaigners, Tory arrogance prevailed, insisting their plans were legal.
This needless mistake has cost taxpayers thousands of pounds in order to start the whole library consultation process again.
Ineffective consultation has cost the council significantly in both money and reputation.
My group is also concerned about the Tory plan to squander £500million on a contract lasting 25 years for a massive waste incinerator, to be built at Javelin Park. This project will cost taxpayers more than other solutions to process residual household waste. It will not only harm the environment, but also saddle the council with a contract that will be costly to abandon.
An economic stimulus plan recently announced to kick start Gloucestershire is certainly the right way forward, but don't be fooled in thinking that this is the generosity of a Tory controlled county council.
Much of the £122million being pumped into the county's economy is thanks to the involvement of the Liberal Democrats in the coalition Government and the private sector.
The £5.6million for road improvements is all being supplied by the Government via the economic partnership group GFirst.
The £16million for the Elmbridge park and ride scheme is also money from the Government.
The £21million to provide new cycle routes, improve bus shelters and close Boots Corner in Cheltenham is subject to a £16million Government bid with the council only having to fork out £5million if successful.
The £45million needed to upgrade the Swindon Kemble line is also Government money – a project politicians of all colours have been backing for many years.
The £20million to improve broadband speeds is mostly from the Government and the private sector with only £7.5million coming via the council.
Liberal Democrats believe if real change is to take place in Gloucestershire then much more investment is needed.
Investing in Gloucestershire will support the well being of those who live and work in the county. The county council should use its resources to create jobs and improve business competitiveness. * The Conservatives did not choose to respond.

“L_escalier,
"When I see the words 'macroeconomic truism', or 'deleverages' I reach for my revolver..."
Fair enough. For "macroeconomic truism", insert "economic fact"; and for "deleveraging", insert "paying off debt".

Your silence is deafening.”

“Asodeska,
"You have to stand up to fascism"
Indeed one does.
But Thatcher liked to take tea with torturing murdering fascist General Pinochet when he was visiting the UK. Funny that!
Of course she armed Saudi Arabia to the hilt - selling $40 billion dollars worth of arms to the most extreme Islamic state in the world - birthplace of Wahabi Islam and Osama Bin Laden. This arms deal, the biggest in the world until recently, was cynically called Al Yamama (The Dove) and off the back of it she set her son Mark up as an arms dealer himself. She of course married into money when she "hooked up" with millionaire hubby Dennis.
Tell me, are you a fan of the economist Friedrich Hayek?

“Oh, Kay Powell no presumption required. You wear your Hammer and Sickle on your sleeve.
And since 95% of Academics are from the Left to extreme Left, where to you suppose your Environmental Radicalist got the notion?
You and Zamed are so immersed in false left wing propaganda you simply do not know which way is up. You do however, appear to know which way is down, because that is the direction that you and your ilk are dragging Britain and the Free World (what is left of it)”

“Read the sentence again, Zamed.
Actually Pinochet only used sufficient force to quell the rebellion. But he got painted as a fascist by the Left Wing Fascist press for doing it.
And just who would Saudi Arabia use their arms against? They don't have the man power to take on anyone in the Middle East. So it was a safe sale.
And what exactly is wrong with marrying into money?
You Left Wing extremists think it is wrong for anyone to have money.
Very sad and very stupid.”

“Oh, I see that I've missed a bit of an argument. Asodeska, please don't presume to know my politics. As for your claim that "putting labels on political positions is a classic Soviet technique", perhaps you'd care to explain why you also wrote of one of my comments: "Ahhh, the classic Left Wing response - as taught by the Soviets." I suppose that if you do it, it's not putting labels on anyone. In fact, it's a logical technique, as taught by a university education - a "Desmond" in Environmental Science at London University, if you want to know.”

"Well Kay, you are well trained. No where do I see the word 'dead weight' in my comment. Putting labels on political positions is a classic Soviet technique."
I do see 'dead weight' in your comment at 11:54pm, on Sunday. Not that I'm getting involved in this argument, just pointing out that it's there. When I see the words 'macroeconomic truism', or 'deleverages' I reach for my revolver...”

“Asodeska,
A couple of simple questions, just so I can figure out where you're coming from:
1. Without monetary support from the government, the banking system would have collapsed, and with it private business. How does this square with your belief that government expenditure is "dead weight"? Put another way, how does your perspective incorporate the "bail out"?
2. Right now, we have a situation where the private sector in the aggregate is focussed primarily on saving and deleveraging. If, therefore, there's no injection of spending from another sector of the economy (either government or foreign), then we're headed for higher unemployment and double-dip. Please explain how your approach – the lightening of the load – will mitigate the spending gap created by the trend to saving, and thereby create jobs and growth?”
