He was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital with facial injuries after the robbers tried to steal his mobile phone in the underpass in Dr Newton's Way, Wallbridge.

The former Maidenhill School pupil said one of the pair approached him and said "excuse me blood, you've got something for me" before demanding his phone.

The Tesco worker said: "I shoved one of them away and the other pulled out the saw. A couple of punches were thrown and I tried to run into town but they caught me in the subway.

"They had me against the wall and were punching me in the face. I tripped over and I was on the floor and I could see them trying to kick me in the face.

"I knew I just had to get away and my face was battered. I got up and I saw one of them coming at me with the blade. I grabbed it and managed to break the blade and just ran."

Shaun went to the Lord John pub, where he was heading to meet his family for a birthday party.

Inspector Tony Fisk, from Gloucestershire Police, confirmed officers were investigating what he described as an "unprovoked and vicious attack".

One of the robbers was 6ft, of medium build, with acne on his face and short wavy black hair. He wore a black McKenzie jacket with white Nike Air Max trainers. The second was over 6ft, of a stockier build, with short dark hair and was wearing a black McKenzie hoodie.

Anyone with information can call police on 101 quoting incident 398 of February 1.

“The very first reporting of this "attempted robbery" was 'dumbed down' why? Crime figures too high?”

“Police won't do anything. If I was him I would get my own revenge and serve justice, those repugnant creatures deserve nothing more but the same thing back, the way the police wrote that statement, just seems like they just don't care which seems congruent to me. They don't do anything these days, it shouldn't matter who commits the crime! No wonder our society is so full of fear with people reluctant to go out at night and living in fear. Seeing these stories too makes people weary and cautious.”

“Would be a help if the cctv camera's were actually working in and around Stroud. According to information from people in the know only five camera's actually are working. One is covering the taxi rank outside the 99p shop. They should all be working not the selected few/ His attackers will probably get let off, because they come from a deprived background or something. Or will be police informants, two many give info on drug deals happening in Stroud. The police should do what they are supposed to do and police our streets not be glorified social workers”

“If this is what they are capable of at a young age, I dread to think what they will turn into.
When caught lock them up for a long stretch, then forced sterilisation so no offspring for the tax payer to support.
I hope Shaun recovers and gets over this. Easier said than done I know.”

“Offences like this that involve violence should automatically warrant a custodial sentence not a suspended sentence, community service or probation, this mindless attack was evil. Good luck to Shaun in his recovery.”
