Blogger bemoans Cheltenham's traffic lights
A blogger has become so frustrated with Cheltenham's traffic light system he has compiled a list of the worst sites.
Luke Briner, 33, is a regular poster on the internet blog, which he calls Traffic Lights That Suck.

Luke Briner is unhappy with Cheltenham's traffic lights
Describing Cheltenham's ring road, he writes: "If you drive up Tewkesbury Road into Cheltenham heading for Oxford, you will pass through no less than 21 sets of traffic lights including pelicans, between Sainsbury's in Kingsditch and where the A40 meets London Road.
"That's 21 sets of lights in 2.5 miles, one set for every tenth of a mile. Every time I think it is farcical, they put another set up for a laugh."
On the lights at the junction of Princess Elizabeth Way and a new housing development near Cowper Road, Luke says: "They favour access from the new houses rather than the main drive on Princess Elizabeth Way.
"When there is no traffic, why would the lights be on any other phase than green to the main road? I can't believe this town."
In the introduction to his blog, the software engineer from Cheltenham, writes: "I for one have had enough of traffic lights within 20 metres of other traffic lights, traffic lights with unfeasibly short green light times, traffic lights blocking a movement for no reason and one of my particular hates, traffic lights on roundabouts. Enough is enough, it is time to fight back."
Cheltenham is not the only town to feel his wrath – he also rails against sites in Tewkesbury on the blog.
Gloucestershire County Council's traffic systems manager, Brian Watkins, said: "Our traffic systems team manages all of the traffic signals and pedestrian crossings within the county.
"The timings of traffic lights are rigorously tested when they are first installed to keep the county moving as freely as possible but the priority is obviously to keep all road users safe.
"Signals and crossings are monitored regularly to ensure their continued safety and efficiency.
"We aim to deal with all urgent faults within two hours of them being reported and non-urgent faults within 24 hours."

“Have visited Cheltenham several times in the past 2 years and enjoy the town and its surrounds - BUT - those damned traffic lights - unbelieveable - I actually emailed the Council on my return home in January expressing my frustration at the sheer lunacy of Cheltenham's traffic "system" - no reply of course.
It has to be counterproductive and costly and I cannot imagine why it is allowed to continue and seemingly expand.
Cheltenham deserves much better.

“I think that some traffic light roundabouts do help ease congestion inrush hour, but do they really need to be on 24/7? Turn off at night please, all this talk about wasting energy and saving the planet.”

“Turning towards the M5 from Monsoon Avenue (NCP Carpark Road) people stop for a red light where people cross from the carpark to get to the cinema. They shouldnt stop. This light is for people coming from charlton kings heading towards the M5!! Often I am suck inside the junction behind them beeping at them!”

“I think the whole traffic light system in Glos. sucks. Look at the lights by Walls, who is stupid enough to put pedestrian crossing lights on the exit of a roundabout, if i have to stop with my truck i totally block the roundabout. Since the traffic lights were installed at Aston Cross there has been many severe delays on the A46, with traffic queuing back to Teddington roundabout at busy periods. Before the lights were installed there only used to be minor delays on the side roads. Where does it all end?”

“The lights outside the Brewery are a joke. It must have been a complete doughnut who designed this layout, the sad thing is his boss must have been even more stupid to think the scheme would work”

“I learned to drive in Cheltenham 20 years' ago, I feel sorry for any poor learner drivers there nowadays - traffic is so intense and no wonder everybody gets fed up and frustrated with the current system of lights.”

“This story has made it into today's Sun!
I noticed someone in St Margaret's Road this morning with a clipboard and a worried look on her face. Maybe she was measuring the timings and phasing of the lights.
I know I was waiting at a red light for several minutes with traffic building up behind me and NO other traffic in sight!
In the rare cases where traffic lights are unavoidable by careful road design and planning, then they should be intelligent, and a modicum of thought should go into setting them up.”

“The traffic light 'system' that stretches from M5-J10 to the Brewery is terrible.
I regularly make this run at 1am in the morning, when there isn't a single car in sight.
I never get though this stretch without being stopped by a red light, even with the lack of traffic.
Just about every single week, I'm stopped at the Hayden Rd lights - there has never been a car waiting for a change of lights.
Equally, travelling to work every day, I am stuck on PE way, driving from M5-J11 to Kingsditch Ln. Although the odd traffic light along this stretch are a pain, it is the lights at the Tewkesbury Rd roundabout that cause real problems. This coupled with one lane for the majority of the straight/right-turning traffic makes it a nightmare.
If someone had performed a full analysis of traffic flow before making major changes to a main road, perhaps we wouldn¿t have to sit in traffic every day¿”

“I drive all over the country and europe, and cheltenham is by far the worst town for traffic flow, even in the early hours of the morning traffic lights turn red on the major route for no reason with no other traffic around. In europe some lights either flash amber on all sides so everyone gives way, or actually switch off. drivers who stop at the brewery lights with no stop line are not paying due care and should be prosecuted. As for P>E way r/about the road markings are wrong as you approach from pe way, it only needs 1 left turn with 2 right turns towards town, at the moment only 2 cars can get into the right turn lane because the traffic going straight on backs up. Also on PE way have you noticed the pedestrian crossing by tommy mores changes to red even when no one is near it, during peak times this causes traffic to back up from kingsditch in the north and from beyond the square in the south, this will only get worse when the 2 schools combine on the kingsmead site. And finaly a big thank you to all of you who object to the M5 jctn 10 improvements and the ring road from tewks road to bishops cleeve this would eleviate a huge amount of traffic from PE way and up through poole way/ brewery. Investment in cheltenham must be severely hit when mr Jeremy clarkson announces on tv and in the press that cheltenham has the worst road system in the country.”
