ADAM Nicholls (pictured) has been named Cinderford's first XV player of the year.

Adam, who joined the club from Cornish outfit Mount's Bay for the start of last season, received the Bob Beavis Cup after being singled out by the club and supporters for his skill and consistency in the back-row throughout the campaign.

Cinderford's end of season dinner was held at the clubhouse on Friday night.

Chairman Rob Worgan led the loyal toast, before club skipper Paul Knight and guest Peter Watkins addressed players and guests.

Geoff Davies, chairman of the Gloucestershire Rugby Football Union, then presented special awards to retiring players Rob James, Mike Hart and Toby Wilson. Phil Kennedy collected the Carpenter Cup, awarded to the best front-row forward, while Carol Field scooped the club award, the Bloxham Cup.

Marcus Brown was named United XV player of the year, with Jake Hinds Stags XV player of the year. Jake received the Gary Biles Shield. Bucks (fourth team) player of the year was Ashley Burris, with Lee Clark picking up the Jim Beard Cup as Colts XV player of the year. Overall, it was a night to reflect on a great season. The first XV finished fifth in National League Two at the first attempt and lifted the County Cup, winning 19 of their 30 matches. The United XV also had a great campaign with a Merit League and Senior Combination Cup double. They lost only twice out of 25 matches. The Stags and Bucks lost more matches, but continue to develop young players for the future.

Pre-season training starts again on June 16. First XV trial matches have already been arranged against Pontypool (home) on Saturday August 15 and Pontypridd (home) on Saturday August 22. A trip to Bedwas on Saturday August 29 has been postponed, but the match will be rearranged.

“Well done Adam Nicholls - what a good season he's had - and well played Cinderford XV - 5th place is not a mean feat for debutants in Div2. Let's have an equally good season 09-10 - COME ON CIND !”
