Bolster's got a Giant chance
DAVID Bridgwater says stable star The Giant Bolster has continued to amaze him ahead of the Cheltenham Festival.
The six-year-old, owned by Simon Hunt, is a 25-1 shot for next Wednesday's RSA Chase after winning two of his past three races.
Bridgwater, who rode five Festival winners as a jockey, said The Giant Bolster had a huge amount of potential.
"I know we're dreaming a bit, but Simon's already backed him at 50-1 for the 2012 Gold Cup," said the Wyck Hill trainer.
"This horse has got so much potential, though, and there's no doubt in my mind he could go to the very top.
"He just keeps surprising me.
"I watch him work at home and just think, 'Wow, that was pretty special'.
"Put it this way, he's a horse I'd loved to have ridden."
"He'll be bang there at Cheltenham, but it's not the be all and end all.
"I'm not going to train his socks off for that one race, because he's got such a bright future ahead of him.
"When trainers have a good horse they can get greedy and run them into the ground.
"That won't be happening with me because I'm not a greedy person.
"But if this horse keeps improving like I think he can, I'm certain he will mix it with the best of the them."
Bridgwater had told Hunt that The Giant Bolster, sixth to Peddlers Cross at last year's Festival, was a certainty to win at Cheltenham last time out.
His confidence was justified as the gelding stayed on too well for his rivals to score by just over two lengths under Rodi Greene.
Bridgwater said: "He was running off a mark of 140, which is his old hurdles mark.
"Myself and Rodi have always thought, at a minimum, he'd be a stone better off over fences, that's why we were so confident.
"Yet again we were totally ignored, but my owner was delighted.
"He absolutely crucified the bookies and has been doing so every time he's run.
"People go on about the bookies always knowing best, but they haven't got a clue, especially if a horse comes from a small yard like ours.
"If I was a gambling man I'd be a millionaire by now."
