Now the pair, who have 30 years of experience teaching martial arts between them, hope that it will help to channel the energies of the area's youngsters, especially those who have become a little unruly.

Mr Montgomery, 47, from Kingsway, said: "It not only teaches discipline but it also gives self-confidence to the youngsters. Not only that but it is also good fitness and it can protect you.

"We wanted to bring classes to Quedgeley and the Q Club has excellent facilities for this sort of thing."

He said that his previous classes in Matson had given children with behavioural problems an opportunity to express their energy in something constructive.

He added: "We had quite a few children there who were able to learn self-discipline and their parents were commenting on how big a change they had noticed in their children's behaviour after coming to the club."

Mrs Murray, who is leading the Godai dojo club, is a nurse by day who regularly travels around Japan, taking back inspiration to her classes.

They will run every Friday night from 6pm until 7pm for juniors.

But it is not only the youngsters who are getting involved – adults and proficient teens can join a class straight afterward from 7pm until 8pm.

For more information on the classes call David Montgomery on 07767 491907.
