Breeder kept wolf dogs in filth: RSPCA
WOLF-DOG breeder Nadia Carlyle has appeared in court on
animal cruelty charges after keeping more than 30 of the
animals in filthy conditions.
The 34-year-old from Lydbrook pleaded not guilty to eight
counts of causing unnecessary suffering to the 19 dogs and
puppies which were confiscated by the RSPCA and police.
District Judge Simon Cooper, sitting at Forest of Dean
Magistrates' Court in Coleford, heard two of the rescued female
Utonagan pups, which are bred to look like wolves, died later
that day despite being taken to a vet.
A postmortem revealed one of the pups, Elissa, had a
pulmonary infection the other, Samara, had been suffering with
broncho pneumonia and pericarditis, which is inflammation of
the tissue surrounding the heart.
Martin Prowel, prosecuting for the RSPCA, said the deaths of
the dogs were significant due to the conditions they had been
found in and the short amount of time between when they were
removed and when they died.
He said: “The results of the postmortems supported that they
were suffering due to the conditions they were kept in.”
He said other dogs were found to be suffering from lethargy,
dehydration and diarrhoea.
RSPCA officer Gary Lucas visited Carlyle's home and ordered
removal of the dogs on November 8, 2006. He told the court:
“The untidiness and smell is what we first noticed when going
into the house.
“The smell of ammonia, faeces and urine hit me immediately
and the further we went in the stronger it became. It began to
affect my eyes.”
Mr Lucas said all the windows in Carlyle's Dechmont Cottage
home were closed and there was no ventilation.
“The cages the puppies were kept in were standard size but
the bedding material was dirty, wet and had dried faeces in
it,” he said.
“There were rubbish bags in the fenced-in compound at the
back of the house that were piled up and contained chicken
bones and faeces wrapped in newspaper.”
He added: “My view is that this did not accumulate over a
day but had built up over days and weeks.”
Mr Prowel said two days before the RSPCA seized some of her
dogs, Carlyle gave civil servant David Pearse a Utonagan bitch,
five puppies and two adult dogs to look after while she moved
house.
Yesterday Mr Pearse, who lives in Yeovil, Somerset, told the
court: “The bitch and pups were vomiting most of the way and
continued to do so when they got home.
“We took them to a vet and they had parvo virus. The bitch
was emaciated and couldn't feed her pups because she had no
milk. She had no energy and was in a shocking condition. Her
health frightened me.”
The RSPCA left eight of the adult dogs in Carlyle's
care.

“I have heard that she is now residing and breeding again in South West Wales and is using other people to sell her pups. I almost made the mistake of buying one from her as her websites make her look like a reputable breeder. Please contact a Utonagan Society or Association before buying!”

“Please note, my comments above were made in relation to last years article on the ASBO served against Nadia Carlyle for noise and smell and are not in reply to this article featured above.
In relation to the RSPCA prosecution covered above, I can only Thank God that she has been banned from keeping dogs, I only wish she had received a life time ban. The 26 poor dogs and puppies in question, have been held in RSPCA kennels for over 18 months awaiting the outcome of this trial. Hopefully they will now be released into permanent loving homes where they will hopefully adjust to normal life. Nadia Carlyle should be closely watched to ensure she does not take in dogs and cause any more suffering.
My thanks go to the RSPCA, for their response to all the calls received and their efforts in bringing this worthy case to court.

“My name is Dawn and I am the Breed Advisor for 'The Utonagan Society' I have to point out that though your article refers to Miss Carlyles website stating that she is the Chairwoman of The Utonagan Society, this information is incorrect!!!! Miss Carlyle was removed from her Commitee position in June 2006 and indeed her membership was also revoked at this time, as we the Committee were contacted by the various authorities involved and also concerned members of the pubilc alerting us to the conditions that these dogs were living in. As with the FODDC we the Committee of TUS firsty tried ALL MEANS to assist her and offer support in order that she could improve her situation and that of her dogs, however all advice and offers of help were refused and the situation became worse. This resulted in us having to dissaociate with Miss Carlyle. Just to clarify Miss Carlyle is not associated with The Utonagan Society nor is she a registered or accredited breeder with us. “This is same woman with dog noise asbo in August 2007.Google her name, see her numerous websites. Pedigree dogs , kennel club DO
NOT have these as pedigree. They are mixed breed expensive MONGERALS. This woman claims to be unhealthy cannot work how can she manage 30 dogs. If she is not working is she or has been on benefits and still claim ? She will keep breeding she uses other people like she kept her dogs. She left Wales owing money ,Known to RSPCA and POLICE for having dangerous dogs. This woman is good at letting people think she is helpless and without any money and help her. People have been left with large bills after looking after her animals.
Ask people of LYDBROOK, ASK RSPCA ,ASK JAN FENNEL international dog trainer about Miss Carlyle. Also ask various UTONAGON groups about her. People need to ask a lot of questions before she starts up again breeding somewhere using another name or another person.”
