Brewery traffic lights are finally fixed
A notoriously confusing set of traffic lights in Cheltenham have finally been fixed.
The junction outside The Brewery complex on Cheltenham's ring road has antagonised motorists ever since the lights were installed in 2007.

Traffic lights
After a two-year battle, Gloucestershire Highways has agreed to take action and workmen could be seen making changes this morning.
Brian Watkins, from Gloucestershire Highways, said: "We have been aware of people's concern about the traffic lights at this junction and have been working with NCP and The Brewery to correct it.
"We fully understand the frustrations caused and will continue to monitor the situation to make sure that the traffic flow improves."

“As someone who knows the odd thing or two about traffic signals then I can offer this experienced advice, first, if traffic signals were installed and tested indepth to validate potential hot spot issues before commissioning then these problems wouldn't arise. todays traffic signal systems can comfortably handle vast complex road layouts to the benefit & safety of everyone, so when this is not done with due care combined with a local authoritys slack atttiude to trouble shooting such problems this will lead to driver fustration & disobeyance from the law, but it has to be said that problem situations is not helped by the now common place moronic behaviour of some motorists and equally pedestrians alike that seem to treat any road space as THERE personal patch to roam unhindered on! ..well sorry to tell you this, but its not!”

“These lights never bothered me as I always did the patented 'MarkyB Power Blast' through them either on my way to the Prince or on my way to Charlies chippy at closing time. I usually drive a bit better when I'm drunk.”

“It was a no hoper from day one,a ring road almost goes into the centre of town, could they not have planned a ring road that simply goes around the town,as the volume of traffic will increase year on year. The cost could have been met by all the money the council seem to lose on a regular basis”

“Oh, finally thy're taking action. I reported these on FixMyStreet ages ago and never heard anything back from the council despite how well known the issue's been.
Part of the problem is with motorists not understanding the Highway Code but to be fair to some motorists, when a queue formed along St Margaret's Road from the traffic lights further down at Henrietta St, whilst the lights remain on red the pedestrian crossing would change priority to serve pedestrians, so motorists ahd the choice of waiting or going through whilst the green man was showing (illegal).
Why would anyone park there? Well, it's a multi-storey car park. Clearly there was a need for a car park and many visitors to the town may not be aware of the other car parks, especially when they see a huge great big multi-storey right opposite the Brewery. But it's an awfully-designed exit, not helped with dodgy traffic calming in Monson Avenue.
Finally, we all know how council's work. If yo don't use your budget, you lose it. All councils must have a seemingly bottomless it of money to spend on traffic control.

“If people actually drove to the laws then those coming out of the side road would not stop at the red light and there is no stop line, I know they are confusing but it was so frustating when drivers don't understand the laws.”
