The Cecil Road resident said her beloved pet Teddy died six months ago in agony after being poisoned.

She had rescued him as a stray and nursed him back to health and said he was the "friendliest cat in the world".

She believes he drank a lethal dose of anti-freeze while on a prowl around the neighbourhood.

She said: "I'm convinced there's someone out there doing this to cats. And they are evil. Utterly evil."

Police are already investigating after seven suspicious cat deaths were reported to them by Linden residents. All showed similar symptoms of fitting and kidney failure.

Mrs Hobbs-West said: "It's been going on for at least six months and I have spoken to other people whose cats have also died in the same way.

"Teddy came in, walking as if he was drunk.

"Within a couple of hours he was foaming at the mouth and his body was jumping and he was crying like a child."

The 52-year-old is known locally as "the cat lady" because of her love of the animals.

She rushed her pet to the vets at 4am but it was too late.

She praised Stewart Piggot & Alderman vets for their help.

Police have confirmed that it is an RSPCA investigation and they are continuing to support whenever needed.

No further incidents have been reported and no arrests have been made.

“I lost my cats up north a decade ago in this way. Anti freeze was being out into milk by a local man who kept pigeons. He also laced the water in drinking troughs so chickens were killed in the same manner. In total 19 cats were killed and 15 chickens. A local dog was also killed by drinking it. We notified the police, kept up a local campaign in the village to keep it in front of people's eyes (it went on over 18 months, as he started and stopped and started again every time there was a fuss). We eventually learned who it was but had no proof but several folks went to visit him about it to talk to him and he eventually stopped.”
