A CELEBRITY chef has taken time out from the kitchen to help Gloucester pupils with a slippery school project.

TV chef Brian Turner, known for his appearances on BBC's

Ready Steady Cook

, visited Highnam Lake, at Highnam Court, on Friday.

He was helping Highnam CofE Primary School pupils release elvers from the Severn and Wye Smokery, based off the A48 in Chaxhill, into the lake.

The children were learning about the importance of restocking the elver population.

Richard Cook, owner of the Severn and Wye Smokery in Westbury-on-Severn, has been active in safeguarding the existence of elvers.

In 2008 he featured on Channel 4's

The F Word

with Gordon Ramsay.

With the money received from Channel 4, Richard bought more than 40,000 elvers and put them into the River Severn.

Elvers, baby eels, are a delicacy, which are high in protein. A 20g portion in a restaurant costs around £45.
