CIRENCESTER Town will be looking to build upon a heroic performance in the Gloucestershire Senior Challenge Cup when Brackley Town head to the Corinium Stadium tomorrow.

The Centurions put in a superb show in the plush surroundings of Ashton Gate on Tuesday night, taking a talent-packed Bristol City side all the way in a 2-2 draw, before eventually succumbing on penalties.

Against a City side packed with first-team squad members, Brian Hughes' part-timers put in a superb display that surely brings hope in their battle to avoid the drop from the Evo-Stik League Premier Division.

With four players in their ranks who have commanded six-figure transfer fees, it was little surprise that the Robins made the brighter start and Cirencester were given the run around for the opening quarter.

However, the Centurions began to edge into the game and after forcing their first shot on goal on 24minutes, Cirencester took the lead four minutes later.

Ellis Dunton fed Scott Griffin for the first chance, but the veteran striker Scott Griffin saw his shot blocked by Wales Under-21 international defender James Wilson.

However Wilson was powerless to prevent Griffin from giving Cirencester the lead with the second chance, the former Gloucester and Cinderford striker lobbing home a header over Lewis Carey in the 29th minute.

Ryan Taylor, a striker signed from Rotherham United in the summer and whose City career has been blighted by injury, forced Bristol City's first real chance of the game on 37minutes but youngster Mike Hedges saved well.

Another man returning from injury, Cirencester talisman Jody Bevan, could have made the game safe shortly after the break with a thunderous drive, but his shot bounced away off the bar with Carey beaten.

Former Plymouth Argyle winger Yannick Bolasie tested Hedges with an arrowed shot, but the young goalkeeper was again equal to the challenge.

Hedges responded with another superb save to deny Aaron Amadi-Holloway and it looked as though Cirencester would hold on for a famous victory until late in the game.

Bolasie, who had been wasteful with his shooting all afternoon, finally hit the target with three minutes remaining to force extra time.

The professionals expected to run away with the game in the extra period and ex-Cheltenham Town loanee Bobby Reid fired them into the lead six minutes before the end of extra time.

But Cirencester hung on, recovered and found an equaliser of their own with Else arriving to turn a cross from the excellent Scott Claridge past Carey on the 117-minute mark.

The match went to penalties and it was Gloucester City loan star Lewis Carey who won it for the Championship outfit.

First, the 18-year-old saved well from Zak Westlake and Jamie Reid before scoring City's third and decisive kick to ensure progress to the final.
