Changes to Gloucester park and ride
SHOPPERS are set to benefit from a new park and ride route in Gloucester.
To coincide with the opening of the new Gloucester Quays Designer Outlet, Gloucestershire County Council has changed the popular bus service.
-

The route will include a new stop at the Quays and a later running timetable.
The move will allow visitors, and the 1,200 outlet employees who don't have on-site parking, to park their cars and catch the bus into the city.
The new route will come into force when the centre opens on May 21.
Starting from Waterwells, the new route heads down the bypass, turning into St Ann Way before stopping at the Quays, then onto Southgate Street for St Oswald's.
This will also mark the beginning of a trial into an extended timetable until 8pm, taking into account the requirements of the nearby college, which has courses running until 8pm, and Quays staff who will be working until late.
Philip Williams, parking and transport manager for Gloucestershire County Council, said: "The new service should be quicker and more convenient if you shop, work or study in the centre of Gloucester.
"The designer outlet is likely to attract a lot of shoppers and the new stop at the Quays will be well located.
"We're running the service later to help college students and Quays employees in particular, but it is important that people realise that we will not continue at the end of the trial if people don't use the service."
Chris Oldershaw, chief executive at the Gloucester Heritage Urban Regeneration Company, said the changes on the route would boost visitors to the city.
He said: "Improving the public transport around Gloucester is an integral and essential part of the ongoing regeneration. The park and ride service is one of the most effective ways to improve access for all whilst reducing the number of cars within the city centre."
If the service is well used it will be kept on a permanent basis.

“Does the Park and Ride come from Waterwells via the Quays and terminate at the Cattlemarket/B&Q park and ride? I was in this park and ride car park in the rain this morning - no sign of any buses, depsite the timetable showing 4 an hour. The one that was supposed to wait from 10.01 to 10.04 was not there! I walked into Gloucester toen centre instead. Hope this service improves after thursday! Free parking for 3 hours here after 10am but if you have to wait 15 mins at each end this combined with the bus journey already takes 1 hour out of the three. Hope the quays is quick to look round and the shops are quick in serving. Surely a large retail centre like this should encourage you to stay as long as possible. Wonder why they have not told us th car parkign fees yet!!!! Cribbs is free.”

“I have to say I think it is a great idea-I use the park and ride now and the buses are every 12 mins and they are not always full so there will be plenty of room as everyone will not go at exactly the same time. The buses are clean and the drivers are friendly and the cost is £1.50 very good value -ordinary bus fareas are more so is parking in the city. It wont effect Quedgeley traffic as cars will use the bypass ,in fact it is better than them travelling into the city in there cars. Surprised by negativity I think its a great idea. The service is already good now it will be better, brilliant idea to have later buses as I dont always work traditional hours so later buses are good. At last a good idea from gloucester council.”

“It¿s a plain and simple fact that Gloucester urgently needs the trade Waterwell s can attract from all regions of the south west arterial M5 route into the county. In order to draw those increasingly high volumes of visitors we need outside holding car parks on periphery routes to counteract what would otherwise end in City gridlock. An early stroll up Westgate this morning confirmed to me what a very beautiful city we have. We need to go on with trading parking places for people places. Gloucester like Cheltenham has so much going for them at this moment in time and we all need to make the best of everything we have because we no longer live in a village environment. Our source of revenue is joined within the county. A sense of Self-worth and admiration for the city should now begin and increase our appreciation for what we already have and where next we proceed to gain success.”

“I think this will add some assistance to people wanting to visit the new centre and has to be a positive in reducing traffic in the centre.
Freddy Arle Court is not a free service, so no it is not a step too far for Gloucester. Far from it, it is a step forward.
Get on Board!”

“Concerned local - the cars will go to the p&r at waterwells - they'll be nowhere near Quedgeley proper. I'm also a bit surprised by the idea from Moaner Lisa that the council could model usage before the shops have opened! There won't be any shoppers and few of the permanent staff- you would be nuts to base a model on that!”
