This year's cheese rolling event has been cancelled.

The cult event, which takes place annually at Cooper's Hill near Brockworth, will not go ahead this year due to an insurance wrangle.

Organisers have vowed that the event, which sees hundreds of people hurtle down the near-vertical hill at break neck speeds chasing a wheel of cheese, will return in 2011 but it is expected to be a ticketed event.

More information to follow.

“We never voted in these miserable beaurocrats that basically want to stop all fun & community activity.
The excuse of fearing litigation doesn't wash. If you get injured cheese rolling you got nobody to sue, it's all at your own risk - unless you're assaulted or something.
The police have killed off the Coleford music Festival by demanding unrealistic sums.
Lets remove the killjoys from positions of authority, I say.
I don't want to see Christmas being banned, but I wonder how long it'll be if we let this continue”

“Please people, look at the facts. This NEW labour government has presided over the biggest demise in Britain (as a nation in general) in all of our collective lifetimes.

PC and health and safety nonsense dominates, overriding common sense and over-ruling ones freedom as an adult to make decisions for ones-self. Yet again, a decision is made that affects the many, deteriorates our liberty, depricates the importance of heritage and sense of identity, and the one key ideosyncracy of our local region is facing its inevitable demise from this point.

Again, this government has presided over a win for a corporation (*unnamed insurance company enters the frame*), benefitting the matey few within the privileged circles of this crooked societal structure, yet undermining the people as a whole.

Tickets now required eh?... Money is the order of this day, as the illuminati continues it's crusade into the machete'ing of our freedom as humans to raom this earth and control our own concept of destiny.”

“As someone with an IOSH Qualification, and with (hopefully) some common sense, I hate the fact that 'If something bad happens on someone's land, they're liable' - I had that issue pushed down my throat in the past by the council when trying to sort out the issue with the Cruisers...

Anyhow, I can't see anything wrong with there being no spectators at 'The end', and obvious signs on the way in and around the course that people are aware of the details of the event, and what it entails... (And signed disclaimers from the entrants) - The basic law of H&S is as long as the organisers do whatever is 'Reasonable Practiable', they will be fine, my measures above (In my eyes) would suffice. And they would have a strong defence against any insurance claim. After all, if we park our cars in a car park, and our cars cost much more than a fair few medical claims, whatever establishments can apparently absolve themselves of all responsibility by putting up a 'Parked at your own responsibility' message?...

Regarding the traffic issues, if people are parking illegally, then the police should prosecute as appropriate, although it's an event, there are still roads and police taxes we pay for... Isn't it the same as asking them to concentrate on any other form of crime?...”
