AN ORGANISATION has applauded a decision to allow more days for tents on iconic gardens in Cheltenham.

Cheltenham Borough Council's planning committee decided last week to allow temporary structures in Montpellier Gardens and Imperial Gardens for up to 75 days this year, and 70 days in the following years.

Cheltenham Festivals' chief executive Donna Renney said: "We are pleased with the decision to permit the use of the Gardens for events and festivals.

"As the number of supportive comments reflected, the Festivals provide a unique cultural mix of which Cheltenham is rightly proud.

“@Tim I believe they do, you have to pay and jump through hoops if you want just a tiny section of a park for a private event so I guess a large event would also have to pay.”

“Is the festival paying the residents of Cheltenham for the "exclusive" use of the parks if not why not, this could pay for the gritting of the pavements!”

“In accepting that the Festival welcomes the decision to allow the parks to be used, can Donna say what can be done to prevent heavy vehicles chewing up the grassed areas during erection and disassembly of the tents?
How can they ensure the gardens are in no worse a state after the festival than they were before?”
