When the team currently second-from-bottom of the table, Aldershot Town, visit Whaddon Road on Saturday afternoon, they will do so in the knowledge that they won just two of their 14 games against rivals from the top half of League Two.

It’s a record that may have contributed to BetVictor chalking Cheltenham up as their 23/20 favourites to land another vital three points in their quest for promotion, and the Shots recent dismal form suggests the bookies may have their odds about right – Dean Holdsworth’s men are now six league games without a win.

The men from Hampshire also have one of the worst records for breaking the deadlock in League Two, hence Stan James’ 4/6 for the Robins to strike first this afternoon, though William Hill call 7/4 for Mark Yates’ side to pierce the visitors’ vulnerable defence during the opening half an hour. On a similar theme, Shaun Harrad is 11/2 at Paddy Power to score first against Aldershot for the second time this season.

Indeed, it was Harrad’s goal that earned Yates’ men a 1-0 win at the EEB Stadium back in August, and punters who think a repeat scoreline could be on the cards can get 11/2 with Skybet, though confident home fans may prefer their side to win on the handicaps despite allowing the Shots a one-goal start at Ladbrokes’ 5/2; Skybet additionally post 8/1 for Cheltenham to win by three goals or more.

Elsewhere, a glance back at the duo’s history shows that their last seven meetings saw Aldershot emerge 4-3 ahead in head-to-heads, though Cheltenham won three of the last five without the Shots replying, pointing up bet365’s 11/5 for the hosts wining this encounter ‘to nil’.

But with the two clubs yet to have experienced a draw, a potential stalemate at Ladbrokes’ 5/2 may not appeal to some backers, though some may fancy the Robins’ back four to keep a clean sheet at bet365’s 6/4, which if they do, could result in Harrad scoring first in a home win at Paddy Power’s 11/4.

As for those backers predicting how the first goal will be scored, then a shot is offered at 4/7 with BetVictor, with the same firm 9/2 about a header – but as long as it’s the Robins who get it, home fans will not be too bothered…
