Cheltenham Town: Fan's view of Wimbledon win with Laurie Cleevely
Fan's view of Cheltenham Town's 2-1 win over AFC Wimbledon win with Laurie Cleevely:
An impressive performance from the Robins against a strong Wimbledon team.
I felt the first half was a little bland in terms of exiting football but we were able to score a good goal with the set-piece abilities Billy Jones holds.
I was good to see Billy back in the starting eleven and to add to his assists, it gives another dimension to our play in which we can score goals from. A strong header from Stevie, one which we all know he’s capable of doing when it lands where he wants it.

Deering provided our attacking spark, he caused problems to the AFC Wimbledon back four and former Cheltenham captain Benno on an emotional return, he deserved his warm welcome after the recent departure.
Sometimes in the first half we just needed to pull the trigger and get some shots on their goal. Paul Benson seemed anonymous, countless crosses not being accurate and he wasn’t getting enough balls to his feet.
That said, we settled and played some nice stuff, with Marlon Pack at the heart yet again. We started to look like a promotion chasing team and perhaps could have nicked another in the first half.
Russ Penn made some strong driving runs and has certainly become more attacking of late, thriving to create chances. However, this style of play knackers out the skipper and that can be costly when we are put on the back foot.
Second half we looked a lot more threatening and there was a higher tempo to the game. We looked strong going forward and created numerous breaks at the Wombles back four, but we lacked that cutting edge.
But it was great to see Carter get another with a neat finish.
I like the new formation and playing all 5 central midfielders, it gives Deering a freer role to use his creativity.
Marlon Pack has more room to manoeuvre in the middle and bring the full-backs into the game. It worked extremely well at times in the game. The intro of the wingers off the bench worked well and puts tired legs under pressure and they should have conjured up another goal.
It was disappointing however not to hold on to the clean sheet and have make the last 10 minutes a little on edge.
I was amazed by Midson’s glaring miss, but Dickenson shouldn’t have been able to get through, Elliot and hector must stay strong and mobile at centre half if we are to challenge for a top spot.
Not to take a shine off an important win, to keep us firing up the table.
Keep it going for Tuesday. Come on you Robins!
