BOSS Mark Yates says that Cheltenham Town must savour their position at the top of the pile and do everything they can to remain there for the next 19 matches.

Last Saturday's 3-1 victory at Macclesfield Town lifted the Robins to League Two's summit for the first time since the embryonic stages of the 2000/01 campaign.

Ahead of tomorrow's home match against AFC Wimbledon, Yates has called for the players to show a steely determination not to surrender their lofty position.

"We took the opportunity to go top of the league when it was there and psychologically I think that was important," Yates said.

"We have put pressure on the other clubs and while there is a long way to go, it's been a good week.

"We are comfortable with where we are and the urge now is to kick on and stay there, picking up as many points as we can."

Yates demanded more noise from the supporters after the home setback against Bristol Rovers a fortnight ago.

He believes a vociferous backing from the stands can help his players exact revenge for their 4-1 defeat at AFC Wimbledon earlier in the season.

"We all want the same thing and the supporters can be the 12th man for us," Yates said.

"Wimbledon won't bring 1,500 vociferous fans to back a new manager like Rovers did, but they will have good support and they'll make noise so we want our fans to give some back.

"Of course we need to give them something, but they need to give us something too."

Yates went to watch Wimbledon's 2-1 home win over Macclesfield Town last week and he was impressed with what he saw from Terry Brown's side.

"For 45 minutes, they gave the best performance I have seen from a League Two side this season," he said.

"They are a good side, but we hope we can hurt them in one or two areas.

"They didn't get the right result against Aldershot and they'll want to come to our place and cause an upset."

Cheltenham were on the receiving end of their heaviest League defeat of the season when they visited Wimbledon last September.

But Yates said they have made considerable progress since that day.

"We are a much, much better team than we were when we went there on that day and that was probably one of our worst performances of the season," he said.

"It was many moons ago and we've moved on a long way since then."

Steve Elliott (calf) remains sidelined and Marlon Pack has been ill this week, but he is expected to be fit to play.
