CHELTENHAM Town had to settle for a point after being held by a well-drilled AFC Wimbledon side at the Abbey Business Stadium this evening.

The draw was enough to keep the Robins in second place in the League Two table, but their disappointing home form continued.

Mark Yates' side had lost all three of their previous Tuesday night League matches this term and they did manage to end that run with a draw, but it was a rather flat display on pancake day.

The first half was a predominantly scrappy affair, with a dearth of goalmouth action at both ends as the sides cancelled each other out.

Former Wimbledon winger Kaid Mohamed set up Jeff Goulding in the eighth minute, but his firm shot flashed wide of the near post.

Goulding had recovered from a dead leg picked up in Saturday's 5-0 win at Dagenham and Redbridge to keep his place up front for Cheltenham and he nodded over a Marlon Pack corner in the tenth minute.

Jack Butland was thrust straight back into action after returning for a second loan spell from Birmingham City.

The young goalkeeper was largely a spectator as Wimbledon failed to threaten much in the final third, but the visitors also looked comfortable at the back.

Mohamed looked capable of providing a spark and he burst through the middle at considerable speed three minutes before the break.

He had Josh Low in space on the overlap, but he elected to take a speculative shot that was charged down easily.

Alan Bennett was cautioned a minute later for a challenge on Christian Jolley, but the Robins back four dealt with him and strike partner Jack Midson well and both defences dominated as the first half finished goalless.

Russ Penn reached a low cross from Luke Garbutt in the 50th minute but he failed to generate any power and Seb Brown gathered it comfortably, but there was more urgency about Cheltenham and for the first time they asked some serious questions of the Dons’ backline.

Penn shot wide after good hold-up play from Goulding as Cheltenham remained camped inside the Wimbledon half, but the killer ball eluded them.

The early second half impetus was lost however and Midson saw a shot deflected over the bar for a corner, which was well claimed by Butland under pressure.

Pack saw a long range attempt well held by Brown before front pair Jimmy Spencer and Darryl Duffy were introduced in place of Low and Goulding for the final 17 minutes.

Dons substitute Billy Knott curled one wide with 15 minutes remaining and Pack smashed a free-kick over from 30 yards.

Butland showed more alertness to pluck the ball out of the air after a dangerous ball was aimed towards Midson.

Garbutt's cross was met by the head of Spencer, but Brown turned it over the bar shortly after Cheltenham switched to three at the back in a bid to find a winner.

Mohamed raced onto Spencer's pass in the 88th minute, but his effort cleared the far post and time ran out.

“Reading the above about goals scored, goal difference etc, I looked up the stats for goals scored in home games and there is your answer concerning poor home attendances.”

“You lot are bananas. Its tough now for all teams with promotion and relegation issues - always is at this time of year. Yet the stats say that CTFC has scored 50 goals from 32 games (more than all bar 2 clubs in the division I think) and has a goal difference of 20, bettered only by Swindon. Trust the manager who has done that for you and face the fact that the run in will be tight and nervy. Or perhaps the supporters writing to TIG have lost their nerve already? I still foster unreasonable hopes that FGR will get promoted, yet we are 7 points off the play off places whereas CTFC is in pole position for automatic promotion. I would love to be in your position”

“I share everyone else's frustrations at the moment. I cannot fathom out why McGlashan is not more involved in particular. I said a couple of weeks ago that we lacked two things: a reassuring presence in goal to aid the jittery defence, and a striker with a physical presence. Jack coming back has sorted out the first one and that is great. We saw, however, once again on Tuesday how we lack any sort of threat up front. Yet again Kaid - despite his obvious limitations - looked the most likely to score for us. How the stats people came up with 5 shots on target by us is beyond me. I cannot remember one! Anyway, a big strong striker who wins the first or second balls in the air would make a huge difference. I'm not remotely advocating we start lumping the ball up, but we simply do not frighten any defence at the moment. Quite frankly every team I've seen against us in the last 2 or 3 months has had at least one striker I'd swap for any of ours! Darryl, Jimmy and Jeff are all decent players, but none have the presence to lead the line.”

“It beggars belief how critical CTFC fans are. You are doing brilliantly on shoestring budget and sparse crowds (2000+ last night?) Arguably MY has outperformed all other managers in the football league relative to the resources at his disposal. So what if he decides on selections that the great unwashed take issue with - his record speaks for itself, so back him. It always proves harder to score and win as the pressure builds towards the business end of the season. And by the way, Crawley could only scrape a draw at home to Crawley tonight.”

“After a poor display against the Gulls and yet another fantastic away result at Dagenham, Chelt played OK last night, but it's now 3 home matches + 0 goals. It's been pretty obvious to see that in the last few home matches (Aldershot, Torquay + Wimbledon), the away teams have worked out Chelt's style of play (ie: counter-attacking) and are now content to "park the bus", aim for a 0-0 (or maybe nick a goal) and frustrate the Ruby Robins - which they doing to them and the supporters to great effect at the moment!!

Chelt have to look for way to get around this and hopefully grab an early goal in their home match against Burton on Saturday. 1 of the ways in which they may succeed in doing this, is if they play 2 proper wingers from the start (Mohammed + McGlashan). I can't understand for the life of me why McGlashan didn't play any part in last nite's match - unless he was carrying an injury. McGlashan has made an impact im virtually all of the matches he's been involved with, yet he hasn't played any part in either of the last 2 matches - Why??

Is he injured, being rested or something else??

However, despite all this, we are still 2nd in the league + if we can just hold onto a top 3 place until the end of the season, that would be an amazing achievement - not sure that we would be successful if we had to go through the play-offs for a 3rd time (has any other club done that??) - but you never know!!

BTW: A cracking piece of news that enhanced the Dagenham result still further was the unfortunate sacking of Martin Allen by Notts County - didn't see that 1 coming!! Still, you know what they say "what goes around..." and all that. County fans - at least you didn't suffer as much (and for as long) as we did!!”

“'Illogical team selection, no tactical awareness and mindless substitutions' and we still have 60 points from 31 games! If only MY had the clarity of vision of these 'barrack-room managers' we'd have 93 from 31.

Julia is right. Given where we were last season and before there is no sense of perspective from two or three here. What we have is a really good counter-attacking team that are finding it diffficult to break down well-organised teams at home. if the season was based only on home games we'd be fifth having scored just over one goal a game. On away games only we'd be second having scored nearly two goals a game. This anomaly is one good reason why attendances are mediocre.

But let's back the management team to come up with solutions. Promotion is a possibility and the play-offs a strong possibility. Which of us thought that in May to August last year?

And can we stop the constant carping of Kaid Mohammed? Sure he has limitations (Elliott bent his ear for 2 or 3 minutes non-stop last night) but he has good qualities too. Make your point once, twice if necessary but doing so every time we lose is disproportionate, fails to recognise that there are a number off-colour and, to be frank, is blinking boring.

As for one soul saying, and I paraphrase, that MR has put together a squad 'whether by luck or judgement', words finally fail me.”
