"He is a winner, a leader and he knows the game."

The combative Taylor has shone in matches against Cheltenham in the past for both Rochdale and Rotherham and he scored in the Millers’ 1-1 draw at Whaddon Road in April 2011.

He was also influential in Rochdale’s 4-1 win at Cheltenham in January 2010 and Rotherham’s 6-4 victory at the Don Valley in August that year.

Ashton-born Taylor passed a medical earlier this afternoon and immediately penned his contract.

He will go straight into the squad for Saturday’s home match against Torquay United.

Taylor began his career as a trainee at Oldham Athletic before joining Stockport in August 2006.

Yates is also thought to be close to bringing in Swindon Town striker Paul Benson on loan for the rest of the season.

“There is no doubt we're struggling at the moment in all areas of the pitch, the only consolation being that no team, Northampton aside, seems able to put a consistent streak together. But having noticed on the BBC Sport website just now that Jason Taylor has signed for us I'd say well done to MY. I've seen little of him but he was the best player on the pitch last season at the Don Valley playing in Fatty Evans' first game as manager.

Two minutes earlier I'd seen that Harry Pell , who looked a fine player in the Cup against us, has joined Wimbledon so the signing of Taylor, a not dissimilar midfield figure looks good on that score too. Mind you what do i know? I'd have touted Sam Deering for us before he left Oxford and he's not set the world alight

But add Paul Benson to the mix and if MY can quickly get the team/squad to gel then the rest of the season could prove more fun than the first half and a bit. All ifs and buts but amazing to think we're still fifth. And the fixture list looks generally kinder to us than this time last year.”
