They trailed for seven first half minutes, but goals from Steve Elliott and Mohamed, both set up by fine set piece deliveries from Billy Jones, ensured Mark Yates' men returned to winning ways.

Only some excellent goalkeeping from Plymouth's Jake Cole kept the Robins at bay until the 37th minute.

He was tested as early as the second minute when a long, flat clearance from Scott Brown caught out the Argyle defence and Chris Zebroski almost capitalised, connecting well with a strike that Cole spectacularly beat away.

Cheltenham made by far the brighter start and some good persistence from Sido Jombati set up Jermaine McGlashan for a shooting chance which he smashed into the side netting in the 11th minute.

Zebroski had already netted against two of his former clubs this season in Torquay and Bristol Rovers and he looked fired up to make it a treble against Plymouth, who he left in 2007.

He latched onto a long ball from Jombati and outpaced Plymouth's centre-halves but he guided his shot the wrong side of the near post after 24 minutes.

Zebroski went close again in the 29th minute, reaching a Jones corner, but Cole made another outstanding save to once again leave him frustrated.

Apart from a couple of speculative efforts from Andres Gurrieri, Brown was largely untroubled at the other end on his 200th appearance for Cheltenham, but he found himself picking the ball out of his net after half an hour.

A ball towards the edge of the Robins box was cleared by Russ Penn, but it fell straight to Conor Hourihane, who was in plenty of space.

He had time to line up an accurate shot which nestled inside the bottom right corner, giving Brown no chance.

But Cheltenham were only behind for seven minutes and it was some skilful wing play from the brightest player of the first half that won them a free-kick in a dangerous area.

McGlashan was cynically brought down, Jones curled the set piece in with his left foot and Elliott met it at the far post and his downward header finally beat Cole.

Hourihane was cautioned for diving after a challenge from Marlon Pack a minute later, but he almost restored Plymouth's advantage during first half stoppage time, bursting through on goal, but Brown reacted well to block.

Ex-Robins loan front man Guy Madjo went down under a challenge from Elliott, but Plymouth’s penalty appeals were waved away by referee Stephen Martin three minutes into the second half.

With Plymouth starting the second half strongly, Mark Yates reacted with a double substitution, with Kaid Mohamed and Darryl Duffy replacing the injured Darren Carter and Shaun Harrad.

Duffy was the hero in the fixture last year, scoring twice as Cheltenham came from behind to snatch a 2-1 win.

Brown had to be at his best to turn another Gurrieri effort over the bar in the 72nd minute as the contest remained delicately poised.

Cheltenham had offered very little going forward in the second half, but another pinpoint corner delivery from Jones gave Mohamed the chance to nod in his second League goal of the season and he duly obliged.

Zebroski remained desperate to find the net and only a clearance on the line from Maxime Blanchard stopped him celebrating in the 80th minute.

There was one late scare as Alex MacDonald missed an gilt-edged chance after a deflected free-kick bounced back to him off the bar, but Cheltenham had done just enough to make it a hat-trick of 2-1 victories against the Devon club.

“Well, there is my thanks for making a point to someone who was nasty to Al Chelt. My point had nothing to do with whether I saw the match or not, it was simply to point out the utter absurdity of saying that someone came on and scored the goal that won his team three points and did nothing else. There is not a club or a manager in the country who would not settle for that. And probably all supporters - with the honourable exeption of one, of course - would settle for that as well. By the way, did you see Man City at West Brom last weekend ? Some idiot came off the bench with ten minutes to go and scored a couple of goals to win the match but did absolutely nothing else. The fans have no time for him apparently.”

“robdoxf...I do...always cheer them on through thick and thin fron the west midland floodlight league to now.
My other points were echoed by our manager so I must be getting something right.
and one other thing if it was not for me and Houghton winding you lot up out there we would never get this forum going :-)
COME ON YOU ROBINS....see ya all tomorrow,Mo and all and will gladly applaud should he score again.
P.S. you can't tell me that Scott Brown as not improved over the past twelve months since he was taught some goal keeping lessons from a kid from birmingham :-)”

“Sure it's a game of opinions ALChelt but your trouble is that you only have one. Win, lose or draw Mo's to blame. Why start a review of the Plymouth game with a remark about a guy who came on for what, half an hour, and scored the winning goal. Why? The remarks about lack of chasing back, poor decision-making and the fact that he's ony ever played for a non-league team are ones you've made a dozen times last season, the only surprise being that it's taken so long to raise it again this season. We know what you think about Mo - give it a rest, it's boring.

I don't in fact disagree on his decision-making though i think it's less frequently wrong than you do. But you could make similar points about each and every player in the team, e.g. lack of pace, prone to lose possession , slow to turn, can't head a ball etc. Why pick on Mo - the criticism about not tracking back is just downright inconsistent. Jermaine may well have tracked back effectively v Plymouth but if he did that constantly it might have helped Sido avoid the relatively poor defensive form he's shown since the back end of last season, e.g. Rotherham away, to recent games, e.g. Fleetwood at home, where he got a real chasing and no help.

I'm not criticising Sido or Jermaine - just trying to make the point that we should appreciate each and every one of them for their strengths and not keep picking on a lone individual. Before that it was Scott Brown, at a time when his defence was all over the shop.

One last word on Mo related to the person here who says he's an occasional pick who chips in with the odd goal or two. Eleven goals last season plus assists from around 40 starts. Fewer starts this season - but then he's been playing with an injury - and still scored 3 goals. Occasional pick? The odd goal? Eh?

    Stop carping -back the team.”

“i'm with you alchelt, you can only have a credible opinion ofa football match if you go to watch it.mr houghton please take note,it really gets proper suppoters backs up to hear your judgements.the truth of it is were pleased to be where we are at the moment, were not great to watch, were winning ugly, but its the points that count.MY loves mo,but i don't think you can afford to carry him.his percentage of decent games is low.we,re performing no were near the form of this tie last season.apart from brown& mcclasan.MY can do nothing about individual errors which cost you games, but he selects the team, formation & tactics, and you sometimes wonder if he's getting the best out of a good squad that he put together.this one up front system does,nt seem to work at home.i like a little & large combination, remember alsop & naylor?.goulding & harrod looked good together.harrod would get a shed full of goals picking up the pieces off a big target man.there you go the mere opinions of a season ticket holder since 1985,been there, done it,got the tee shirt.there you go mr houghton,YOU CAN'T BEAT BEING THERE!”

“Houghton..:-) Your opinion as no weight as you dont watch the games.
Johnboychelts...football is about opinions, even M Y admited we were fortunate to get all the points on Tuesday, and as for your other comments wrong on all accounts.
But to say I have no idea about football..hmmm.
Your right I'm not a great lover of Mo my opinion of him is that he as pace which can be a threat especially away from home, however his tatical awareness is poor and his decision making is equally poor.
If Mo was that good he would not have spent most of his carreer playing non league football and being moved on by other manager who maybe had the same opinion!
I will continue to support my local team and have my opinion as I have done for several years.
and yes I did cheer when Mo nodded in Tuesdays winner and I suspect he is a nice guy,but as a fan it does not mean I have to like him as a player, and thats what makes footy so good opinions, man management, choices, whatever.
It is odd though that you choose to attack a fan and tell them to support another side, there are far too few of us from this large town and surrounding district as it is so I'm afraid I will decline your offer.”

“John boy chelts - hang on. That kind of post has no place here. ALChelt thinks he's an expert who knows more than the professionals but the kind of personal abuse you handed out there was way over the top. Let him make a fool of himself by saying that someone scored a winning goal but 'that was it ... nothing more' - that says it all. No need for the other stuff.”

“Good posts here - agree with the points made. It was a close match + even closerwin for the Robins. Robins edged it 1st haf, Plymouth better side in the 2nd half - thou neither side created that many chances - both goalies were not called into action much. Mo is always a fringe player but occassionally he pops up with a good move or 2 or the odd goal - good to see big Stevie Elliott bag a goal as well - defenders need to chip in too - good to us score a goal from a corner - not the Robins way normally!!

We needed to win this match (and Sat's for that matter) after missing out at Bradford - a well-fought win against a Plymouth side that will be up near the play-offs I think come the season's end.

Pleased with three points then - but still worried about our lack of creativity in the final third (apart from McGlashan) when we play 1 up front. After our improved peformance when we went to 4-4-2, maybe this will see Duffy get a run in the side - if not, I can see him sking MY for loan move come January if he's still not playing regularly - he was our top goal scorer last season after all - and he didn't start much in the 2nd half of the season then!!”

“An excellent win on Tuesday, joint 3rd in the league. Our best start to the season in years..hopefully straight promotion this year instead of playoffs!
Hates seeing negativity from horrible fans like this ALchelt.... WHO IS HE? probably 40 yr old virgin with no friends, who seems to have no idea about football and hates Mo. Get a life and support some other team, loser!”

“Mohamed comes on and scores the winning goal and there's a posting saying that's all he did ! You couldn't make it up ! Ever heard of Jimmy Greaves ? - some moaning minnies used to say the same thing about him.
What a shame Yates hasn't got a clue and if only he had the tactical genius shown by the experts on here, the Robins could be fourth in the division with the same number of points as the much vaunted Fleetwood Town. Er, hang on ......”

“I think we deserved it, just! 1st half we were by far the best team and could have gone in 2/3-1 up on chances created... 2nd half never really got going but, if you read their match report, you'd think it was the Alamo in the 2nd half, which it wasn't (that open goal miss apart I don't think Browny had much to do at all). Continue to grind out the results but need to find that spark we found around this time last season!”
