Cheltenham Town boss waits on League One striker
BOSS Mark Yates says he is prepared to leave it late as he bids to add a striker to his ranks ahead of tomorrow's trip to Burton Albion.
Yates is waiting on a goalscorer from a Coca-Cola League One club having missed out on his primary target, John Akinde from Bristol City, earlier this week.

Mark Yates is continuing his search for a striker
Cheltenham's most recent loan additions, Aaron Lescott from Bristol Rovers and Colchester United's Medy Elito, met their new team mates only a few hours before last Saturday's home clash with Chesterfield kicked off.
Yates said: "I have gone for a League One striker who is not in the team at their club at the moment.
"I am waiting for an answer after a couple of knockbacks and if it means getting them in on Saturday morning, that's what we will do.
"The difficulty is that we are near the bottom of the table and we are going for players we know will make a difference.
"They have got to be able to make an impact because we have only got one or possibly two loans left in terms of finances.
"We can't litter the squad with loans for the sake of it and we have to make sure we are right for the run-in and fully loaded."
Cheltenham struck the bar three times in last week's 1-0 home defeat by Chesterfield and Yates is confident his side's luck will change as they bid to stave off the threat of 23rd placed Grimsby Town.
The Mariners are four points adrift of the Robins, who now have a game in hand.
"There was a bit of doom and gloom around the place, but we have lifted that and I am still positive that we will be fine," Yates said.
"The players have to keep the faith and the last two performances have been all right because we have done everything bar scoring.
"Our luck will turn, but we have to make our own luck."
Burton were 1-0 winners at Whaddon Road last month.
"They are above us in table and we will give them the respect they deserve, but we will be going there to try and win the game," he said.
"I want more off everyone and one goal could make all the difference to our confidence."

“Come on guys - it ain't gonna be Gilly or Kandol - be serious + realistic!
Whoever comes in thou, I agree with C+G Robin + applaud MY for waiting until the RIGHT striker comes along (that we can also afford!!). He's proved with his signings with Lescott + Elito that he knows a good player when he sees one (unlike any old dross that MA was prepared to get in to "satisfy" the fans).
Let's all hope that MY's paitence will be deservedly rewarded.”

“To Mark Yates:
I'm right behind you Yatesey and have every faith you'll achieve good things at the club.
You had a tall order coming in when you did - but I'm very pleased you are here and in charge.
It was always going to be a case of 'survival' and getting to the end of the season before you can have a proper crack at building your own vision here and putting your own stamp on the club.
Catching up with all the news and reading back over his comments from the past week, it is clear to see Mark couldn't be any more different to the previous idiot in charge.
I'm pleased to see he is being careful and using his discretion as to who he recruits. He isn't panicking but instead taking his time and waiting for the RIGHT person. I applaud him.
Yates may not have the 'contacts' that Allen had, or indeed have people dotted around the country 'owing him one'.....but in time I think we'll see Mark has a much more level head and indeed much better judgement.
I should not even be comparing him to Allen - but his attitude towards loan signings is a relief and most welcome.
Loan players don't make a squad, they should be selected with caution and only to fill gaps - as a last resort.
This is something Allen never grasped and in doing so, our club lost its 'core' or 'spirit'....with devastating results.
I'm really pleased to see young, local players coming up into the main squad for next season. This bodes well - young players whose careers are in the ascendency and who are eager to do well for a club and make it their home.
I think Mark will achieve a good balance of youth and experience. I trust his judgement and come next season I think we'll see every player who steps out onto the pitch WANTS to be there. If not, they will be out of the door: Mark played with great passion and commitment for this club and he will expect the same from anyone he signs. Simple.
Good luck in your search, Mark....and here's hoping for 3 points tomorrow.”

“Why not sign Paul Furlong or David Eyres? They both seem to fit the mould of a current cheltenham striker”

“Why not get Devaney in on loan, he is not playing for Barnsley at the moment and im not sure if he is injured as he was on loan to MK dons not long ago.
Im sure he could do a job at this level for us and he still has local ties with the town.”

“Pretty certain Duffy is on loan at Carlisle.
Andy Williams is on the Gas bench at the moment behind Heffernan and Kuffour. Could be him.
Would love it to be SG but can't see it.”

“Saw Stevie G come on as a sub against Brighton on Monday - he looked a big threat when he came on and I would have thought he'd be too close to a first team place to be coming back to us on loan. Would love to see it though. We've not been the same since he left.”

“Yates point blank denied the Gillespie rumour earlier in the week, so unfortunately I don't think it'll be him. He is generally on the bench though, seems to be coming on for Colchester to replace Odejayi for the last 20 mins. Tresor Kandol would do very nicely for me, but I'm guessing it'll be someone more local... is Daryl Duffy playing for the Gas at the moment?”

“I would be very surprised if Gillespie cam back here. There must be 23 league One clubs that would take him easily. He is quality at that level, let alone league 2.”
