Sido Jombati beat his friend Jose Veiga to equalise seven minutes later after the Cape Verdian goalkeeper had flapped at a Cheltenham corner and allowed the former Bath man to stab home.
The Robins then laid seige to the Macclesfield goal in the second half and dominated the early exchanges of before Jeff Goulding hammered home from the edge of the box on 67 minutes.
Luke Garbutt added the gloss in the final minute of injury time, as his heavily deflected free kick rolled into the net.
The win leapfrogs the Robins over Southend United and Crawley Town - both not in league action today - and to the top of the table.

“This was one of the best results of the season. After last week it could have been a real stumbling block but MY had the courage to rest a few and put out what some may consider to be not his first choice team. Add to that the fact we went a goal down to a hard working side but fought back well to top the league makes this a defining win in our season. Well done to all the lads who stepped up off the bench and performed. Excellent!”
