Cheltenham Town's hat-trick hero stunned by heroics
HAT-TRICK hero Michael Pook described Cheltenham Town's 6-5 triumph over Burton Albion on Saturday as the most amazing match he has ever known.
Midfielder Pook had only scored four League goals in seven years before his Pirelli Stadium heroics as the Robins battled back from 5-3 down with three minutes to play to snatch the most incredible of victories.
His remarkable treble came within 10 minutes and all three strikes were from outside the penalty area.
"I have never been involved in a match like that before," said Pook.
"I haven't scored many goals in my career and me and Andy Gallinagh were in midfield to do a defensive job and I have scored three goals, so I am still shocked myself to be honest."
Pook's 94th-minute winner was greeted with jubilant scenes in front of the away bench, with all of the coaching staff and substitutes jumping on to the pitch to join the wild celebrations.
Cheltenham trailed 2-0 at half-time and Pook says the players deserved the verbal tirade that came their way from manager Mark Yates, but their second-half performance showed there was plenty of character in the squad.
"We deserve the scenes at the end because we have had a tough year and there has not much chance to celebrate," he said.
"There is loads of character in that dressing room and we all want to do well for the club.
"Even after the poor quality of the first-half performance, with belief we got something out of the game.
"We took our chances and we have struggled to score, but we hit six in one half so it's quite bizarre, but we're delighted."
Cheltenham's third win since Yates took over as boss in December took them six points clear of 23rd-placed Grimsby Town with a game in hand over their nearest relegation rivals.
Yates paid tribute to the way his players responded to their half-time rollicking.
"It was probably the most amazing match I have ever been involved in and my head is all over the place," said Yates.
"It was a mad game and to not be winning until the 94 minute is something special.
"I said one or two things that I am paid to say at half-time and I might have upset a few, but I challenged them to dig themselves out of the hole they had dug for themselves.
"I'd like to thank the players for the way they believed and applied themselves in the second half.
"There were some great goals and credit to the boys because in the position we are in, it would have been easy for them to fold.
"But there is spirit among them and if it takes a few words being said, maybe I have to do it more often."
Despite seeing his team end their scoring drought in the best possible style, Yates will continue his search for a striker this week.
