Cheltenham Town 1 Bristol City 1

David Bird's perfectly placed free-kick gave Cheltenham Town a 63rd-minute lead during another encouraging friendly performance against Coca-Cola Championship side Bristol City this afternoon.

City levelled with 16 minutes to go to claim a draw, but the Gloucestershire Robins were the better side at the Abbey Business Stadium and there were a number of positives to take away for manager Martin Allen and his coaching staff.

Both teams created plenty of clear-cut goalscoring chances, but Bristol City’s Peter Brezovan was marginally the busier of the two goalkeepers during a goalless first half.

Cheltenham threatened first in the seventh minute when Justin Richards combined well with Elvis Hammond and the latter shot wide of the left post.

Michael Pook’s cross was headed wide by the impressive Marley Watkins, but City almost took the lead after 15 minutes.

Cole Skuse’s corner was met by a firm header from Marvin Elliott, but acting right-back Josh Low hacked off the line to maintain Cheltenham’s clean sheet.

Former Cheltenham loan star Frankie Artus showed some nice touches for City and his cross was met by Liam Fontaine, but Scott Brown saved.

Ivan Sproule cut inside from the right and saw a firm drive held by Brown at his near post before Richards turned sharply and sent a curler wide of the far post.

A long throw from Lee Ridley bounced in the City area and was powered towards goal by David Hutton’s head, but it cannoned back off the bar and his second attempt was cleared off the line by James Wilson.

Nicky Maynard missed a couple of chances from good positions before Hutton sent a rasping effort over the bar.

Another Skuse corner was headed against the bar by Elliott in the 43rd minute and Brezovan saved well from Hammond after some magic from the unpredictable striker.

Andy Gallinagh had a strong first half at centre-back covering for the rested Michael Townsend.

City changed all 10 of their outfield players at the break, while Cheltenham’s starting XI continued into the second half.

Striker Danny Hayes blasted a shot across the face of Brown’s goal and wide of the far post in the 50th minute before Martin Allen made his first change, replacing Watkins with Barry Hayles.

Hayles almost made an immediate impact, playing a one-two with Hammond before trickling a shot wide after using his strength to good effect and he then hit the base of a post after Hammond’s shot had been saved by Brezovan.

Trialist Michael Pook sent a low cross from Bird wide of the near post, but Bird opened the scoring in the 63rd minute.

Richards was tripped on the edge of the box by former Cheltenham man Brian Wilson and Bird casually curled the resulting free-kick into the top left corner with former Swindon keeper Brezovan nowhere near it.

Louis Carey cleared off the line expertly from Hammond who had danced his way into the penalty area and rounded Brezovan as Cheltenham remained on top after breaking the deadlock.

But City levelled in the 74th minute when David Clarkson netted an opportunist goal, intercepting Gallinagh’s attempted clearance after Michael McIndoe had delivered from the left.

Hayes directed a shot wide of the near post from Gavin Williams’ cross as the scores remained all-square and Cheltenham remain unbeaten during this pre-season period ahead of Tuesday night’s clash with Bristol Rovers.

“I know a lot of people are going to get on my back for some of my opinions below but i feel i am correct in what i am saying.

Lots of positives but things which still worry me are: as some have said - Brown's distribution needs variety. City cottoned on to the hoof up to the forwards and it was easy for them to push us deep from goal kicks so that their 'keeper could easily collect. The good thing about that is that it can be easily rectified.

I know Hutton is very popular and i think his touch and pace will be great assets in L2, however, he has no spacial awareness or positional discipline. Which, in turn was making Low look like he was having a poorer game than he actually was. City's main threat was coming down that side and i know Marley played there also so i am not damning Hutton, i'm just pointing out that he needs more work than some may think.

I remember last season's friendly vs Oxford and Watkins being a super sub and the guy has promise but he also needs to be aware of what his position demands. Drifting in can create goal scoring opportunities but there were several times when a quick switch of play or a wide option was needed and it wasn't being offered. So it is pleasing that this Bozanic looks to be coming.
I think Pook is a diamond in the rough, subtley goes about his job. If he stays, he and Bird must communicate who is to push up and who is to drop because several times there was a gap in the middle where both went to the ball. But that is expected at this time of the footballing year.

Overall, i'm looking forward to each game as we are looking promising.”

“Thought it was a really good performance until the end. Brownb plays well but needs to work on his kicking for sure. Thought Low did well at RB and i have much more respect for him after he's shown great commitment to this club by taking a wage cut. Ridley solid and more vocal which is working well. Gallinagh definately plays better as a defender than a midfielderand Duff looks strong and surely will be captain. Bird needs to stay in midfield and run the show where he's best. Watkins and Hutton looking good on the wings. Pook, not entirely sure, walks around alot and hardly goes into either box but then comes out with a great tackle, his passing is very good though so could be interesting as a signing. Richards, despite what others have said here, i think he looks like he COULD be an inspired signing, good touch and was linking well with Hammond and Hutton inparticuler. Just needs to start scoring and not playing on the wing and he'll do well here. Hammond looked good but failed to convert his chances and lost his confidence late on and needed subbing before he was. Hayles looking strong but not entirely sure he wasn't knackered after 10mins but he should be important for us this year, would like to see him start see how he does. Alsop? what is MA thinking?? He was great for us years ago but i agree with the comment that said he looked like a supporter given a sub appearance. No offence to Jules but he's some way off the pace and will not be a good signing. We've alreay got a haldf decent strike force with 4 strikers Hammond Richards Hayles and Denton so why do we need Alsop? Also if Allen is asking for help to sign him? I'd rather put the money towards Tabor who was excellent against Southampton and a right back, and we still need a centre mid. One thought though, if Allen is bringing in a left winger then maybe we could try Hutton in the middle with Bird? worth a go else we have 4 wingers, a luxury in our 'small' squad.”

“Very good display from us, although some things are not good. Credit to Hammond for being n so many good positions for chances, however he had around 10 1v1 chances and took none. Richards is too quiet, Alsop is pointless and I wish Allen does not waste money on this. Pook was great, same with Bird who scorred a very good free kick. Hutton had his best game yet and was running all over the park and worked well with Lowe who played just behind him. Marley once again was dissapointing for me, he failed to create much and made little impact. In defence we were solid of the majority of thee game, duff was great as always, Ridley likewise. As previously mentioned, Lowe worked well with Hutton and was not afraid to go up the feild, however I was dissapointed he did not go up for corners as he is an obvious ariel threat for us. Gallingher also played a great game, always willing to throw his body in the way of City's strikesand not afraid to make a tackle in dangerous places.
Vincent, I do not see how you can critisise Denton, you probably not seen much of him, and from what I have seen he will do very wellin this league. He can play with the ball in the air and at his feet. He has great spacial awareness and is an obvious threat during set plays.
And those in the know, can be that well informed. this team is more than capable to play at this level and I believe we may have an outside chance for the playoffs.
One question I have for you Vincent is, why do you post messages on this site, shouldnt you be more concerned about your club?”

“Freddy - unfortunately, a family birthday prevented me from going - I am looking forward to the Birmingham City friendly thou. I see the bike ride donations are building up quite nicely, keep the donations coming everybody and hopefully we will be able to sign Pook, Tabor + the guy from Reading (not Antonio, as it turns out). Good results so far from the Town, let's hope we can continue the run into the league campaign.”

“To be honest Julian Alsop looked like he was a supporter being given ten minutes at the end as a reward for his efforts during the clear up at the ground. If this is the case can we expect to see Martin Horwood, Steve Smith and the others named in the programme making appearances over the coming weeks??? They may well look less out of place than Alsop.”

“Justin Richards will be the worst centre forward in League 2 (again), closely followed by Alsop and Denton.

Cheltenham Town widely tipped for relegation by those in the know.”

“Not too sure about some of your ratings, CTFC.

Gallinagh played his heart out, as he always does, and did a lot of getting stuck in useful stuff, and anticipated well. He can't really be blamed for their freaky goal as Scott Brown, who didn't have such a great game really, should have shouted for that ball. Scott Brown also frustrated our players by constantly changing his mind about throwing the ball out, which at times would have been much better than his aimless over punts to their keeper. He really needs to work on those two aspects of his game, or the ball will keep coming back with interest.

And your ratings of Pook, Bird, Watkins and even Barry Hayles make me wonder if I was watching the same game.

Nice to see how everyone is ignoring the inane comments from the little chap from Taunton...keep it up and he might go away.”
