And almost immediately Terry Gornell had the ball in the net for what Cheltenham thought was a winner, but he was ruled to be in an offside position.
Cheltenham started the match on the front foot, with Steve Elliott and Matt Richards returning from injuries and David Noble making his full debut in midfield.
But they fell behind in the fifth minute when Elliott's slip after a collision with Ryan Inniss allowed Patrick Agyemang to prod past Scott Brown.
Agyemang should have scored a second in the 13th minute, but be blazed over the bar after being set up up right-back Yassin Moutaouakil's run and cross.
Cheltenham improved as the half wore on, but it was still against the run of play when they levelled in the 36th minute.
Dropped skipper Russ Penn had gone on for the injured Inniss, forcing a reshuffle which actually had a positive effect on Cheltenham.
Gornell threaded a fine ball through for McGlashan, who rounded John Sullivan, stayed on his feet an placed the ball into the net.
Cheltenham grew in confidence and were on top when Portsmouth regained the lead.
Jed Wallace was allowed to weave his way to the byline and pull back for Johnny Ertl who scored the first goal of his Pompey career and probably the easiest he will ever net.
Portsmouth started the second half on top, with Elliott hacked an effort from Ricky Holmes off the line and Brown saving well from Andy Barcham as a third goal seemed inevitable.
But Cheltenham weathered the storm and they were rewarded deep into stoppage time when Elliott's ball in fell to McGlashan, who completed his brace and earn a morale-boosting share of the spoils.
