Cheltenham Town produced another encouraging friendly performance against Wolves this evening, but failed to score for the third match in succession.

Andy Keogh's first half super strike separated the two sides, but with the addition of a loan striker still to come, Cheltenham are shaping up well ahead of their new npower League Two campaign.

Robins boss Mark Yates rested some of his key players, who worked hard in their 0-0 home draw with Bristol Rovers two days earlier.

Wolves fielded a young side, with only USA international goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann likely to start their Premier League opener against Stoke City at home.

Yates stuck with a diamond midfield, with former Wolves player JJ Melligan just behind the front two of Jeff Goulding and trialist Josh Klein-Davies.

Cheltenham made a confident start, but it was not long until the Wolves front pairing of Keogh and Sam Vokes began to cause problems.

Andy Gallinagh cleared off the line after Geoffrey Bia Mujangi chased a through ball and reached it ahead of the advancing Daniel Lloyd-Weston in the 17th minute.

But Wolves opened the scoring in the 28th minute when right-back Brian McGroary burst infield and found Keogh 20 yards from goal.

The lively front man casually curled a shot into the top left corner, with Lloyd-Weston unable to reach it at full stretch.

Vokes was a major threat in the air and he went close just before half-time, outjumping his marker and nodding Scott Malone's free-kick over the bar.

Lloyd-Weston had been fortunate when he allowed Vokes' shot to slip from his grasp, but it flew wide for a corner. The young goalkeeper distinguished himself in the 49th minute when he showed lightning reflexes to stop Vokes' header from another Malone delivery.

Melligan forced Hahnemann into a save at his near post and the goalkeeper looked less than convincing when he fumbled David Bird's shot, but Brian Smikle hit the post from a tight angle following up.

Hahnemann looked altogether more like a top flight goalkeeper when he made a double save to deny Keith Lowe a goal against his former club after a fine cross from Danny Andrew, whose deliveries were impressive throughout.

Cheltenham pushed for a leveller and Jake Lee headed wide from Michael Pook's cross as it stayed 1-0 to Wolves.

Cheltenham Town manager Mark Yates' post match thoughts: "It was a really decent 90 minutes for us against a very strong Wolves team.

"People probably expected them to bring a development team and I was one of those people, but I got a phone call yesterday telling me to beware because there was some big hitters coming and they had some quality players out.

"We put up a great showing with a number of younger of players. We caused them problems and we had some great deliveries from set pieces, but we are not a team that is built for 'land of the giants' style of play.

"We played some terrific football and we were the better team until Wolves scored. We showed them too much respect and that's what happens when you concede a goal against Premier League players.

"We set the tempo in the second half, passed it well and they are always dangerous, but I was delighted with what I saw tonight.

"Jeff Goulding felt his calf so he came off. He didn't want to come off, but he felt a twinge, so we took him off as a precaution.

"It'll be a young side going to Cleeve, but we will sit down and decide who else needs a games. We have next week planned right up to Gillingham on the Saturday.

"Josh Klein-Davies did well again and I will have a chat with him to see where we go. He was up against Steven Mouyokolo has just been to the World Cup. I thought particularly in the second half, he caused them plenty of problems. It's probably decision time for him now and I will have a think and see what I can do.

"Some people will criticise us for not scoring, but we have done everything but score tonight. We have played against decent opposition and created plenty of chances, which is the right way to do it.

"We have not scored in two games at home, but believe me we will score goals I am trying to bring something in and hopefully it'll be sorted by the middle of next week.

"I know these boys can score goals if we keep playing like that and it's all be encouraging for me and my staff. Even if we went to Gillingham with this squad, there are goals in this group of players.

"For the budget we had at the start, the players have been fantastic and I am excited by what I have got here. When the pressure starts at Gillingham, I think this group of players is exactly what I wanted. They will show no fear and that'll do for me."

It was a great match we played like a team which was great to see we will be ok in the up and coming season. It was also nice to see players being clapped on and off the pitch well done to all the players. and to the fans that got behind the players I think it made them player work harder”

“Agree about Andrew. Looks like he could be a lovely little player. Good performances all around. Our final ball was lacking at times but we were unlucky that we didn't beat the keeper with at least one shot especially as he drop it right on Lowe's head. Goulding had some lovely touches and our ball retention was incredible at times. Looks like we may have one hell of a season, roll on Gills!”

encouraging display from kyle haines, a real prospect, jake lee looks like he has finally beefed up and gone up a notch, but danny andrew was superb and did everything but score.
