Wycombe were gifted the lead in the third minute through Keith Lowe's own goal as his 100th appearance and first start of the season opened on the worst possible note.
He stabbed the ball past Scott Brown as he attempted to cut out a cross from Joel Grant.
But Cheltenham recovered well and controlled much of the opening period, with Brown a spectator.
Former Birmingham City midfielder Darren Carter made his first start, with Sam Deering recalled in the attacking role just behind lone front man Shaun Harrad.
Carter and skipper Marlon Pack pulled the strings in the middle of the pitch, with Deering a constant threat and wide men Jermaine McGlashan and Kaid Mohamed also prominent.
Cheltenham created chance after chance, but Harrad shot straightat Nikki Bull after one move involving at least 20 passes.
Deering fed Mohamed, whose shot was weak and McGlashan saw a drive touched over the bar by Bull, but Cheltenham levelled in the 38th minute.
Pack went down and Harrad made no mistake, sending Bull the wrong way from 12 yards.
Lowe directed a shot from Carter over the bar from close range as it remained level at the break, but Cheltenham had been dominant.
Wycombe showed an improvement after the break, but Cheltenham still looked the more likely winners.
Harrad fired over after being set up by Mohamed in the 48th minute.
Substitute Gareth Ainsworth, so often a thorn in Cheltenham's side, saw a cross headed away from almost underneath by Sido Jombati in the 77th minute but Brown did not have a serious shot to save throughout.
Bull blocked well from Jeff Goulding and ex-Wanderers forward Chris Zebroski shot side of the near post as Cheltenham mounted a late push for a winner.
Goulding brought down a corner well, but then blazed over as Wycombe held on, but Cheltenham showed the improvement Yates had demanded after the previous week's setback at home to Accrington Stanley.

“Thanks for excellant summing up CheltRobin, reading different reports you appear to be pretty near the truth.
No surprise in M Y making a strange decision, however mr cautious was probably more concerned in not losing than pushing for the win, maybe it will be a good point come the end of season?
I always thing Gould trys his best but not sure he quite makes it,as for Duffy I think he as been really unlucky, like Harrod he could have got a couple of tap ins and gone on to great things.
I like Duffy and agree he looks like he needs a run of games ,trouble is he wont get them as long as Harrod stays fit and keeps his lucky streak going.
As you say two biggies coming up now, early in the season but I think the lads will be up for it...hope M Y is!”

“After last week's shambles - this was a decent point - but we should've won!! We even scored Wycombe's goal for them + Brown was troubled all match - the 3 points were there for the taking - could it be 2 vital points dropped at the end of the season - hopefully not.
As for Lowe - don't think he saw Deering coming in on his left to clear the ball away. Lowe wasn't positioned correctly when he hit the ball - but still unlucky to fnd the back the 'net.
Chelt dominated the match until MY took off our 2 best players - McGlashan + Deering - WHY?? Maybe tiredness - thou they didn't look it. I think if MY had maybe left on McGlashan on, we could've gone to win the match as he was causing problems every time he had the ball (thou he has to stop falling over so easily).
The point is the least we deserved - good pen by Harrod - 4 in 5 matches - none of his goals (so far) have been spectacular - but if he scores 25 goals from tap-ins and pens then I don't mind at all!!
Just a final point regarding Goulding - didn't contribute much when he came + he should've scored when he blazed a mile over near the end of the match.
Worse thou - apparently some supporters at the front of the away stand saw him do a rude gesture to the supporters after they had a go at him for missing that pretty easy chance for a professional player. I was at the top of the stand so I didn't see it, but also apparently he just walked off the pitch at the end of the match, not acknowledging the supporters.
Anybody else know anything of this??
Goulding (and Duffy for that matter) are prob both getting very frustrated sitting on the bench for every match - but that's still no way to react to a bit of barracking. I was very surprised that MY signed him on another year in the summer - really can't see him starting many matches this season (unless injuries / suspensions) and if did do that gesture to the fans, then I can't see them being too keen on seeing him in a ruby shirt again. Hope it's not another incident like Townsend at Hartlepool a few years ago - I hope those fans have got it wrong.
Watch this space I guess - I'm off to see if it's been downloaded onto You Tube.
I can also see Duffy asking to go out on loan come January if he isn't getting regular starts - excluding loanee Harrod - Duffy is by MILES Chelt's most natural striker - but he's getting no match time at the mo + it this showed when he came on yesterday, as some of his touches were very rusty - not his fault - he just needs to be playing more. However, in the current formation perferred by MY - there doesn't seem to be room for him - Shame.
Anyway, much better performance from the Ruby Robins and a decent point - 2 very important matches coming up now at home - Sarfend and Oxford - we have to take 6 points from these to get back on the auto promotion route.”
