Cheltenham were on top for most of the first period and played some attractive football, but they conceded in the 44th minute and lost all composure.
Scott Brown made an excellent save from Britt Assombalonga, who had beaten Keith Lowe. A ball into the box was then well cleared by Lowe, but Kevan Hurst's cross was not dealt with and right-back Sean Clohessy found the bottom left corner.
Things worsened for Cheltenham after half-time and they found themselves 3-1 down within seven minutes of the restart.
Hurst's free-kick was nodded against the far post by Ryan Cresswell via Brown's outstretched palm, but Assombalonga was on hand to convert the rebound from close range in the 49th minute. Appeals for a foul on Steve Elliott were waved away by referee Scott Duncan.
And three minutes later another Hurst delivery was too good for the Cheltenham defence, who allowed Mark Phillips to power a header past Brown.
Hurst could have made it four in the 55th minute, but his shot flashed wide of the left post.
Cheltenham did improve thereafter, but a comeback never looked likely.
Kaid Mohamed sent a shot over in the 61st minute after being set up by Sido Jombat, but the dominant Cresswell almost added another in the 69th minute as his goalbound header hit team mate Gavin Tomlin on the line.
Jombati headed over the bar from a Billy Jones free-kick an Barker cleared off the line from Shaun Harrad.
Substitute Jeff Goulding saw a backheel saved by Paul Smith deep into stoppage time, but Cheltenham's clearest chances arrived in the first half and Southend ran out convincing winners.

“Al
You are a touchy little sole, aren't you!
I don't presume to assume that because I've watched football for 40 years that it qualifies me to know the game better than someone who's been playing and coaching it for a similar period.
Yes, I do have my opinions, but they count for nothing; just like yours.”

“Chelt Robin. Where are the 700 fans from last season? maybe they can't afford to watch League 2 football or like me have moved to other parts of the country - in my case, Southend, funnily enough. Although not funnily enough as the case was on Monday morning when I turned up for work! May not have been wearing a red shirt but I certainly had a red face!”

“Great posts on here - mostle echoing my thoughts on the match. For 44 mins we were in the asendence - a goal up (could've been more) + keep Southend at rms length. Then, a ball into the box not cleared on numerous occasions, a slip by Lowe and the ball's in the back of the net. No dramas thou - we will pick from where we left off right? Ah, well no actually. 10 crazy mins at the start of the 2nd half with lots kamikaze defending sees us 3-1 down and heading for defeat.
So why did MY them wait an agonising 20 mns before aking a sub?? I only have 1 critisum of MY as a manager and this is it - not reacting quickly enough when matches have turned against us - especially at home. When the subs are (eventually) made, he takes off our 2 best players - Deering + McGlashan!! Poor old Duffy too - if he can only get a 15 min run-out in this kind of sitution - what does the future at Chelt hold for him??
Can anyone explain those decisions to me becuase I'm lost.
Basically, I think Benno back in the back 4 ASAP to get some calmness and solidity back. Nothing against either Loew or Hooman, but without Benno alongside Elliott, the goals have started to pile in - 6 goals in 2 home matches is not acceptable and certainly not promotion form.
Must also agree about Mohammed- eems to ba a fav with MY if not the fans - just as Smikle used to be!! Still, I guess it's the same withevery manager - they have their fav players and nobody can tell them differnt. Also getting annoyed by the long ball to Harrod - he needs the ball swept across the box for him to tap in - that's his syle of play.
Plus points? Well, I do have 1 - think the midfield trio of Pack, Carter + Deering is startin to tae shape - although there's not a great deal of pacein there, some good triangle-type passing should be enough in this League to unlock most defences - we have to keep pressing on with this.
Fianlly, just a point regarding the attendances - I know that we have lost the last 2 home matches, but where have the 700 or so gone from last season - have they given up already? Maybe they are lost in the Bermuda Traiangle!!
Anyway - still very much behind MY and the lads - a home derby against Oxford is theperfect opportunty to put the wrongs of the last 2 home matches right.
COYRR!!”

“There you go Paul 45...you just made two mistakes, the first is you give credance to bobhoughton, who never watches a game but still puts his ten pence worth in,and then you have a dig at me for expessing my opinion,I take it Paul you dont have an opinion?...Exactly !
Football is all about opinion's you dont need coaching badges coming out your ears to understand or have an opinion,it is only over recent years that Managers have been made to take coaching badges, that does not make them great Managers or always get it right.
Martin Allen was shocking at CTFC but appears to work at other clubs,I might also add that often my opinion as been echoed my M Y himself what frustrates me most he does not appear to learn from his errors and persists with a player in Mohamed who in my opinion is a weak link if he starts,I would say I dont think he is a genuine left sided midfield player and given a go on the right might suit him better, however he still lacks tatical awareness,he often chooses the wrong option when on the ball,he stands too far off his man when defending and often lags behind the play when attacking...watch him Paul..because I know Im right amature or not!
Finally I will be there tonight cheering on my local side unfortunatly a lot of local footy fans cant be bothered,we have a good standard footy side in this town and it is a pity they dont recieve the support they deserve,I hope tonight more of our supporters are more vocal as we must have the quietest ground outside of Old Traford!”

“Bob
Why not get some superbly gifted amateurs to do the job?
Al is always telling us what Mark Yeates is doing wrong...”

“An interesting point made by BelloRobin - Yates is the best thing since the Steve Cotterill years. Not forgetting who has managed the club since, I wonder what percentage of the Robins faithful would agree or argue with that ? Perhaps it would be interesting to draw up a short list of all the tactically sophisticated managers around at the moment who are available and willing to come to a mid table club in the lowest league - for probably the lowest wages on offer at any comparable club. When I say a short list, perhaps I mean a very short list. Just for fun, of course.”

“lets hope that MY love affair with mohamed doesnt result in mcclasan getting the drop.MY pulled that gem of a idea last season,it probably cost us promotion.no pressure MY,but if you can't get it right for oxford, there will be some discontent & rumblings.”

“Bello robin
I was waiting for this one,how tinted are those glasses you wear,I do not think that any of the fans would disagree with your sentiment however that does not mean we are wrong or maybe even right, tell me Bello can I ask you are you 100% in your thinking that M Y is a tactically astute young manager? do you also think a player with the ability and football awareness of Kaid Mohamed would at 30 years of age just be getting a chance in league football if he had been good enough in the past for all the non league sides he as moved on from?
M Y can obviously get in good players and create a good feeling amoung the players, but you cant pick teams on favorites,in Pack and Carter you have two similar players can they play regularly in the side if so you need a player capable of breaking up play in the centre or the wide players have to tuck in quickly to help disrupt the oppositions possesion,I feel McGlashen does this to a degree but Mohamed stands far at least 10 yards off his man giving them time and space to pick passes etc,he is also often slow to react when we are in possesion, with one player up front he needs to react quickly in joining the attack not hang 5 yards off the pace.Marlon Pack is a gem of a player if he had more pace he would alreacy be playing Championship standard however he as been looking for too many world class passes instead of doing the simple stuff, this causes him to lose possesion in dangerous areas and puts us on the back foot,Jones is an average player who rarely overlaps and most of his crosses come in from a 45 degree angle ,food and drink to most average defenders.
If M Y really studies his DVD's then he would notice these points, and I have to say again he tried working his away system at home last season and it did not work, why should it be any different this season. At home we need at least two strikers and if we are going to persist in one up front in Harrod then the ball as to be kept on the ground with the ball be worked through the channels and try to get in behind, with players trying to hit the byline in order to created good attacking angles.
I have said before football is not rocket science, lump a ball up in to the air who stands 5'10" agains a guy running on the bal who stands 6'2" plus who is going to win 9 out of 10 times?
So Bello M Y is great and he can do no wrong but take off those rose tinted glasses...Please!”

“For me, Mark Yates is the best asset this club has had since the SC years. His achievements last season speak for themselves. Remember the state we were in when he arrived? He has raised expectations to the point where fans are now disgruntled if we don't occupy the top three. Well done Yatesy!”

“if MY keeps picking teams with his heart instead of his head, were going to be in all sorts of trouble.as alchelt says, its frustrating because supporters can see a strong squad assembled at the the club, but a manager who has no idea how to make best use of them.when he's quoted that mohamed his his favourite player, then he has left himself wide open for ridicule from all angle.MY will be spending all season trying to find a combination thats works upfront.as for bob hougton saying be careful what you wish for.all i wish for is a tacticly aware manager who can pick a balanced side and react with changes when the game requires it.some might say its commendable when MY admits to picking the wrong side for a game, lets hope these games don't start mounting hope.”
