Pete Bowan, 52, who lives opposite the crash scene in London Road, described the aftermath.
He said: "I was in the front room when I heard the smash.
"I assumed two cars had collided and that the woman in the street had been in the vehicle.
"It was very confusing because some people were saying that she was a cyclist and I said that couldn't have been right because there was not bike.
"She must've been carried a long way because the bike was still down by the traffic lights.
"She was in a bad way. Her legs were smashed up a bit and she had very serious head wound. There was a lot of blood.
"I hope she survives."
Emergency services rushed to London Road after reports of a collision between a van and a cyclist.
It is believed two vehicles, including a white van and yellow car, were involved in the collision.
The road between Sandford Mill Road and Hales Road was still closed in the early hours of Saturday.
Witnesses should call Gloucestershire Police on 101, quoting incident 499 of September 27.
