"The important thing for us is to keep working at our game," said Hodgson.
"There'll be a lot of pressure on us, but this team is growing in accepting pressure."
We asked local people in Cheltenham town centre what they thought of England's chances next year of lifting the World Cup.
Kevin Brunt, 54
"I'm not expecting much more than the last 16, maybe quarter-finals. My expectations are lower this year."
Jim Bell, 21
"If we get the right teams in our group we can make it through the group stages, maybe even make a fluky semi-final."
Will Parker, 28
"Like any other English person I'm optimistic as usual but as soon as we come up against a big side I think we'll crumble."
Maclean Shoniwa, 20
"I think our team is better than last year, new young players like Townsend are helping us improve."
