Their recent success in winning the British Water Polo League  gave them an easier group for the first stage of the knockout competition.

Their first game was yesterday against Caledonia, eighth team in the British Water Polo League,  and the gulf between the top five  teams in the UK and those outside of the Super 5s was more than evident, Cheltenham cruised to a 20-9 victory.

The win included five goals for captain Dave Taylor and four for Adam Legge, on his 26th birthday.

The second game of the day was much harder against Manchester.

Cheltenham's champion form showed through, however, when they went three goals clear just before half time a lead which they maintained for the whole of the second half.

The final score was 13-10, with hat-tricks for both Mark Banwell and Will Middleton.

Cheltenham will now progress to the finals, which will be held in Manchester on the weekend of February 23 and 24.

The prize for Cheltenham is qualification for the LEN Trophy (Ligue Européenne de Natation).

The draw for the group stage and the locations for this competition will be done in August and the competition will be held in October.
