Cheltenham hotel's Downton Abbey treat - for £1,350
FOR most TV viewers switching on Downton Abbey provides a welcome spot of Sunday night escapism into the opulent lifestyle of a bygone era.
Now staff at a Cheltenham hotel are offering people the chance to look around the real thing by running trips to Highclere Castle, home of the fictional Lord and Lady Grantham.
Ellenborough Park Hotel in Southam has put together a package comprising a private visit to the plush venue which, in real life, is home to the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon, to coincide with the latest series which started on Sunday.
People taking advantage of the offer will be bussed to the Berkshire estate where they can walk the oak-panelled corridors and sweeping gardens inhabited by the characters of the ITV drama.

The price of an overnight stay at Ellenborough Park including a day trip to Highclere Castle starts at a princely £1,350 per person.
A spokesman at Ellenborough Park, said: “For fans of the television series Downton Abbey, we are offering the unique chance to experience the aristocratic lifestyle in the place where it all began.
“While at Highclere Castle, guests will be able to explore many of the areas where the show is filmed including the saloon, state rooms and bedrooms, experiencing what life consisted of in the early 1900s.
“People will also have the opportunity to experience Highclere Castle’s Egyptian exhibition, which contains relics from the tombs that were discovered in Egypt by the Fifth Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter.”
The offer includes a second day trip to country house Ditchley Park in Oxfordshire, which was home to Winston Churchill and his war cabinet during the Second World War.
The offer is only for September 30 and October 7. Rates start at £1,350 per person including an overnight stay in a luxury room, tours of Highclere Castle and Ditchley Park, meals and use of the spa facilities at Ellenborough Park.
