Curry Corner’s father and daughter team are hoping to be hot in the kitchen when they head to Gordon Ramsay’s The F Word for a challenge of a lifetime.

Shasul Krori and his daughter, Monrusha, hope to clinch the prestigious title of Best Local Restaurant next Tuesday from the Michelin starred chef with a fearsome reputation for high standards and a sharp tongue to match.

The popular food show is celebrating the very best of Britain’s independent local restaurants by seeking out the highest quality food at affordable prices with the

help of nominations from 10,000 restaurant goers across the country. Only 18 restaurants nationwide have made it into the programme.

Curry Corner in Fairview Road opened its doors in 1977 and has now garnered a name for itself through its exquisite menu and famous visitors including Rick Stein, Michael Palin and Richard Branson.

Now the restaurant has been refurbished and the menu consists of only traditional Bangladeshi food where only the freshest spices will do.

The cooking combo and their team will go head to head on Channel 4’s programme against Birmingham-based Lasan on Tuesday when 50 diners will decide if they are going to pay for the three dishes each restaurant prepares. Both will choose the main course they cook on the night with Curry Corner opting for its signature Monkfish cream curry dish. The starter and dessert will be chosen by Gordon.

Shasul, 60, from Bangladesh has been cooking all his life. Heavily influenced by his mum - Curry Corner’s first female chef.

Monrusha is a law graduate whose thirst for food came to the fore after qualifying from Cardiff University having been around food all her life.

She said: “I don’t think there are any words to truly describe how we felt when we found out we’d been nominated. We were extremely excited and really proud. It was the most phenomenal piece of news.

“We got a phonecall out of the blue. It took us all completely aback.

“We didn’t hear that we were through to this stage until only a couple of days ago when we had an official visit and we didn’t know who was going to be on the judging panel. When Gordon walked in our jaws dropped. It’s a moment we’re going to remember for a long time.

“Now we’re really nervous and excited.”

Shamsul added: “I watch Gordon Ramsay on TV - I’m very fond of him and I’d said I wish one day he would walk into my restaurant as a customer and then there he was.

“When we started business our aim was to introduce Bangladeshi food. You can buy ready made sauces and I did once, many years ago. I threw it away - any of my spice or sauce I do myself.”

The F Word will be shown on Channel 4 at 9pm.
