Cheltenham water polo star causing a splash in international game
JACK ARTHUR is making a splash in the water polo world after being selected to play for Wales.
The Balcarras School pupil is also joining the Great Britain under 18s team.
Jack's first game for the national side was played against Lithuania during half-term.
And he will soon be off to Poland for a tournament in the build-up to the European Championships at Easter.
The 16-year-old said he took up water polo when he was about five after he got bored with swimming.
The sport, which is mainly popular in America, Italy and Hungary, takes a huge commitment, according to the teen.
He said: "I train six times a week and it is cross fitness like sit-ups, push-ups and squats.
"I would like to be a professional player when I am older, but it depends on the funding."
Despite his international status, Jack received no support financially.
He pays for all of his own equipment and travel and even when the GB team play internationals, the players have to pay for the pool.
Jack said: "I raise my own money through babysitting, plus a bit of gardening for my grandparents. But it means everything to me – it is a huge achievement."
PE teacher Paul Greenway decided to see if he could help raise funds for Jack.
He wrote in the school newsletter: "Jack is an extremely modest young man who continues to manage his sporting commitments very effectively and without any fuss.
"One issue which is difficult for him and his family to manage is the financial implications of playing at this elite level.
"Accommodation, travel costs, kit and even pool time all require self-funding.
"I am writing, therefore, on Jack's behalf. If you, or a contact that you may have, are interested in giving some support to this hard working student, please contact me at school. Any support would be most appreciated."
And the appeal paid off.
Alison Jones, from Vets on the Park, donated £250 to help Jack's bid.
Mr Greenway said: "This is a brilliant gesture from Mrs Jones and it has been a great boost to Jack and his family. They are hugely appreciative.
" I hope it will encourage others to do the same and that Jack can continue to thrive without breaking the bank for his parents."
His dream would be to play at the Olympics. He is following in the footsteps of Cheltenham water polo star Rob Parker, who is hoping to experience glory at the 2012 games.
Head teacher, Chris Healy, said he was very proud of Jack's sporting achievements.
He said: "He is also a really nice lad, friendly, hardworking and very reliable, so it is particularly pleasing to see him do so well. I am just hoping he might give me a ticket for the Olympics if he gets chosen."
