She was trapped in a green Daewoo Lanos following a collision with a grey VW Golf.
Three people from the Golf were taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital on spinal boards and two were released later that day.
The third, believed to be from Coleford, was kept overnight for observation, and Gloucestershire Police inspector Tony Fisk said they were not in a serious condition.
The road was shut while emergency services dealt with the crash, which took place just after 3pm.
On the Forest side of the collision, traffic was diverted up Oakle Street, while HGVs were sent through Cinderford on the A4151 to the A4136 and told to re-join the A40 at Huntley.
Traffic on the Gloucester side was diverted through Over, away from the A48 to remain on the A40.

“Madeleine67, I agree! I too travel this road and have seen some idiot drivers, especially on the stretch by the abattoir (usually heading towards Glos). My partner works for the emergency services and unfortuantely, his observations are that it is usually the innocent that come off worse, with the idiots that caused it, not! That last comment, however, is meant in no way judgemental in this case, as it is not known who was at fault (if anyone was at all).”

“Poor lady - my thoughts are with her family and whilst nobody yet knows the cause of this accident - I must comment that I travel this road on a regular basis and never fail to be amazed at the sheer recklessness and arrogance of some drivers. I always stick to the given speed limit - which after all is there for a reason - this seems to infuriate some drivers who seem to think it acceptable to tailgate and flash their lights at me - even worse are the "near misses" impatient drivers overtaking - risking a head on collision - how dare they take a risk with other road users lives. Sadly this attitude is all too common - even amongst my own friends and family - I know people who consider it "cool" to speed and drivers who stick to the given speed limits are considered old fuddy duddys.
Its not cool to be dead though - or cause the deaths of others - there is nothing wrong with the A48 - its the arrogant risk taking drivers who make it dangerous.”
