A TOTAL of 16 Scouts from 1st Wotton-under-Edge scout group were presented with their Chief Scout's Award in a ceremony held at the group's Conygres Scout centre and campsite last week.

The award was presented by Geoff McFarland, Technical Director of Renishaw plc, which has strong ties to the local community.

As Geoff commented, "I have been really impressed by the level of enthusiasm and participation shown by the Wotton Scouts and must congratulate them on achieving this award."

For so many Scouts to all earn the Chief Scout's Award at once is a rare event. It is the highest achievement possible in Scouts, requiring them to earn badges in a wide range of activities and skills. In 2011 Wotton Scouts took part in a 10-day Jamborette in the Netherlands

Weekday troop nights have included local conservation work, traditional scout skills like pioneering, camp fires and backwoods cooking, climbing, kayaking, sailing, navigation, first aid, even learning to drive real cars!

Some 13 of the Scouts were part of Pioneer troop, the original members of the troop since it was formed in January 2009 by leaders Ben Spokes and Steve Carpenter.

Since joined by Guy Lendon, Andrew Griffiths, Caroline Alliston, Rich Lee, Phoebe Magnone and Mark and Karen Daly, the leaders have arranged troop meetings and camps over the years. Three of the Scouts were from Pathfinder troop, headed by Jon Davies, Andrea Barnes and Ray Harris.

Congratulations to all the Scouts and best wishes for the future, with many of them moving on to Explorer Scouts to Sean Slater, Daniel Latimer, Josh Spokes, George Farrell, Imogen Lee, Sophie Barnes, Sally-Ann Snowdon, Chloe Moss, Amy Driver, Jessie Barnes, Sam Butter, Howard Rich, Matthew Glover, Scott Carpenter, Calum Sadler and Calum Rivers-Cole.
