A WARNING about the dangerous riding of scooters by Tewkesbury School pupils is being taken seriously by its teachers.

Northway parish council wrote to the school about some pupils riding recklessly between the school and Northway, on the M5 motorway bridge.

Andy Steele, the school's deputy headteacher, said: "We take the safety of our students travelling to and from school very seriously. We constantly remind them about the dangers of crossing busy roads and encourage them to do so in an appropriate manner."

He said staff did not want any of its children being hurt on the roads.

“It would be ace if Cheltenham trialled a PHYSICAL limit between the lanes and road such as how Australia do it http://tinyurl.com/c3fb4br

So for example anywhere where it's shared usage you could hav

Pavement Cycle (could also be a bus lane) On street parking and/or traffic

Hopefully that turns out well in the formatting :)

So basically you have a raised bit between the cycle path and pavement to stop pavement wanderer's and also a physical break between the cycle path and cars on the road thus stopping cars parking on cycle paths or driving in them etc.

This could be done on main routes to start e.g. Gloucester dual carriage way to chelt roundabout or chelt roundabout to town ?”

“A lot of Cycle Paths are unfit for purpose. It's actually a bit of a joke compared to some other countries. You cannot, for example cycle on a dedicated route between Tewkesbury and Cheltenham, or Gloucester and Cheltenham.

Andypandy - I do not like pavements that are split between pedestrians and cyclists, although I do use them, unless it is busy, then I will cycle on the adjacent road. The reason is because pedestrians do have a habbit of just wandering across the line and being hit by a cycle can do a lot of damage. Additionally, as tishwash points out, you then have to cross at every junction and peoples drive ways, which is dangerous and slows everyone down.

I would rather that the cyclepaths were on the same level as the road, but visibly marked, maybe with red tarmac for example, and pedestrians on the pavements.

That said, I do agree with what you say about Tewkesbury's cycle routes, they are reasonably good for getting around town, but I think they need to be expanded further afield.”

“@andypandy789 thanks for the degrading comment, no stablisiers for me, also I do have lights, a SODDING bright front light that lights up the path rather than a dinky LED one but I also ensure it's pointed downwards so as not to blind oncoming motorists.

I also have a helmet before that debate starts.

My comment was a passing comment, I'm guessing you aren't a cyclist but I emplore you to go and look at some of the cycle lanes around Cheltenham with roots growing through, drive ways going over (often the drivers don't bother to look if anyone is coming on the path), or roads that cross it so the cyclist has to stop at every junction, check nothing's coming out or turning in then continue (even if there is a give way I'm not going to risk it, I may be in the right if I get knocked down but it doesn't pay to be right if you're dead).

Many of the lanes also have big hedges growing up so you can't see in advance if anyone is coming either from side roads/drives or potentially directly head on (like the town to gchq cycle path where it bares right before baring left in a weird dog leg (see link here https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=51.895397,-2.108995&ll=51.895478,-2.109316&spn=0.001415,0.004128&num=1&t=h&z=19) and no matter which direction you're going in you have no chance of seeing on-coming people/traffic/cyclists. (https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=51.895397,-2.108995&ll=51.895308,-2.108906&spn=0.001415,0.004128&num=1&t=h&z=19&layer=c&cbll=51.895348,-2.108887&panoid=XZB4RlWAt5YhJYV0eHlhQA&cbp=12,299.43,,0,8.01) by the way it has also been raised by the Cheltenham cycling clubs about the dangerous condition of the cycle paths but nothing gets done.

Oh also how about the drivers that park on the cycle lanes ?

Oh and yes I do stop at red lights and often shout at other cyclists that go through them saying they shouldn't.”

“So how are the cycle paths in Newtown near Morrisons not fit for use??? Jubilee Way??? cyclists quick to bleat if things don't suit them. Cycle paths are for the cyclists to use. if they are gonna use the road be nice if a) they had lights and b) passed cycle proficieny. so tishwash, which do you use? took your stabilisers off yet?”

“@andypandy789, when the cycle paths are fit for use I'm sure you'll find more cyclists using them.”

“The dangerous riding of scooters isn't restricted to Tewkesbury. I've seen them riding 3 abreast in Churchdown and overtaking on blind bends and hills between Churchdown & Hucclecote.”

“Or can't be bothered to move. If anything i find it is the older, should know better generation who are the worst. The pupils soon get the message but the older peeps won't move out the way either as a pedestrian on the cycle path part of the right of way or as a cyclist on a pavement.

And no, I am not some anti cyclist person. it is just that there should be give and take with both parties.”

“I agree with you Andypandy, but you still get pupils and adults using cylce paths as walking routes, and do not move out the way when they clearly know you are behind them.”
