Children protest against Gloucestershire incinerator
CHILDREN have been having their say on plans for a controversial incinerator in Gloucester.
A £500million burner at Javelin Park, in Haresfield, was given the go-ahead in September.
Despite a last ditch bid by Liberal Democrats and campaigners to derail the plans last month, their 11th hour 'call-in' was thrown out by Conservative councillors.
On Saturday protesters once again took to the site, near Junction 12 of the M5, this time with their children in tow in a bid to illustrate the harm they say will be caused to future generations.
Sunday and Monday evenings £12.00 per head for an all inclusive meal with Indian and Thai cuisine (normal price £14.50).

About 60 people attended the Children's Right's Respecting demo against the incinerator, complete with banners and chants.
Resident Claire Card lead the group to the Haresfield Beacon.
She said: "The more we've thought about it, the more we realise how important it is that the children's opinions are heard, as they will be growing up in the shadow of this incinerator."
Her daughter Martha, 10, said: "I am worried about the traffic and my health. It might be really poisonous.
"There are a lot of nice walks here and it will spoil the view as we will be able to see it."
Cos Ttofa , whose son Luca, six, goes to Haresfield School, said: "Saturday's event was all about protecting the future of our children. It will also have a massive visual impact on the area, and a huge environmental impact too.
A spokesman for Urbaser Balfour Beatty (UBB), the company which inked the deal to build the facility, said: "We know there are concerns over a facility in our county.
"But we at UBB believe that much of the information being promoted in the county is wrong and designed to scare people."

Really? - Just two examples of documented safety breaches from supposedly 'well-run' incinerators in the UK -

No it wasn't.
Gloucestershire County Council recklessly decided to sign a contract with UBB even though they do not have planning approval and have thus exposed Gloucestershire taxpayers to a potential £13 million contract penalty liability.
Interesting to note that GCC have removed their supposedly impartial planning officer from this case and brought in an outsider on a short-term contract together with hired "planning consultants".
One might almost imagine they are trying to tip the planning decision in their favour. Questions must be asked of how the planning process is being handled. Something really stinks at Shire Hall.”

“To those saying the parents are using their children - don't be so patronising to the young.
These young people will have to live next to, breathe in and look at the consequences of this incinerator.
It seems to me that these young people have a much better understanding of the 'complex issues involved' than an obstinate old man like Cllr Waddington.”

“Are the parents misusing their children for political purposes? Would they be right for example to advertise commercial products or services on their children's clothing or school bag or pram? real time/live product placement?”

“Well had a look at the site and like most people including me affected in those areas why do we need a incinerator at all?”

“Does anyone really expect Urbaser Balfour Beatty to admit that there are flaws in their Human Health Risk Assessment for the proposed incinerator, or that the environmentally friendly alternatives being constructed elsewhere are cheaper and safer? Urbaser Balfour Beatty are only interested in one thing and it isn't the welfare of the people of Gloucestershire.”

“Regarding the remark made by 10 year old Martha about it spoiling the view - I remember when my sister and I were the same age and were taken up to Haresfield Beacon and were urged by our father to "look at the view" - we couldn't have cared less about the view, what 10 year old does without being prompted by their parents?”

“Nice, using children to say exactly what you have drummed into them.”

“I don't have a problem with people protesting for or against various schemes, but I would question whether 6 to 10 year olds can understand the complex issues involved here. Surely they are far more likely to be repeating their parent's views.”
