Children ready for the first day

THOUSANDS of youngsters are preparing for their first day at a new school this week.

According to figures from Shire Hall, 6,671 children will be joining reception classes and 6,490 will be transferring to secondary school in Gloucestershire.

Councillor Jackie Hall, the county council's cabinet member for schools, said she hoped the youngsters would enjoy their new experiences.

"This is a big step in their lives and they will need the support of teachers, parents and carers to enable them to make the most of their education," she added.
