HISTORY came to life at a Cheltenham school as kings, knights and damsels filled the classrooms.

Youngsters in Year 2 at Berkhampstead School in Pittville Circus Road took part in their annual History Mystery day yesterday.

The event sees the children and staff dress up as they learn more about the past.

This year, the pupils have been learning about castles and knights. Starting the day as pages, they rose through the ranks to squire before being knighted by King Richard IV, played by their headteacher, Richard Cross.

Gill App, head of pre prep, was dressed as The Fool for the day.

She said: "The children loved the day. They learn so much more finding out the answers to clues than if they were just sitting at a desk."
